Campo & Graffi Adjustable Height Dining Table, 1959, Both Signed and Published
By Franco Campo & Carlo Graffi
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Rare and elegant circular form, adjustable height, dining table designed in 1959 by famed italian designers Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi for their own design company 'Home'.
Campo & Graffi studied under and collaborated with Carlo Mollino on several projects as well as designing some of the most exquisite italian midcentury Furniture in their own right. Please refer to the 'Biography ' section below for more historical information on the designers and please also refer to the very last collage image that I have put together which illustrates some of their most stunning designs where you can clearly see the influence of Carlo Mollino on their work.
The 41 inch ( 104 cm ) diameter circular tabletop is finished in mahogany veneer and is mounted on a telescopic ,adjustable height, enameled aluminum frame which still retains its original 1950s 'Home' manufacturer's label., please see detail image 3. The hidden underside of the table is finished in a very early type of pressed wood.
The height is fully adjustable between 22,85 " (58cm) at its lowest to 31.5" (80cm) at its highest . Please see photos which illustrate both extremes in tabletop height. Given the wide range of flexibility in table height this table could be used for several different functions.
The tabletop height is adjusted and then locked in place via a threaded rod finished with an elegantly detailed and heavy cast aluminum knob woth a knurled finish. The heavy cast aluminum cruciform legs each have individual height adjusters for uneven floor surfaces. A very refined and architectural design.
Literature:
'Rivista dell Arredamento' June 1959, black and white full page advert illustrating various Campo Graffi designs for their 'home' brand including the circular dining table.
'Rivista dell Arredamento' 1961 full page advert illustrating more campo graffi designs artistically drawn by Campo and Graffi in Silhouette. again including this dining table where the angled cruciform legs are clearly visible.
Biography of designers Franco Campo & Carlo Graffi :
Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi studied at the polytechnic of Milano under the stewardship of maestro Carlo Mollino. Upon graduating in 1950 they developed a strong rapport with Mollino and became close friends, collaborating closely with Mollino on many of his architectural , interior design and furniture projects in addition to working alongside Mollino on his designs for several pavillions for design fairs and exhibition spaces. Franco Campo in particular quickly became Mollino's primary assistant at Turin polytechnic.
When Campo & Graffi decided to branch out on their own Mollino's influence was clear to all, often resulting in beautiful organic biomorphic forms that Mollino himself would have been proud of, they even used Mollino's preferred carpenter 'Apelli,Varesio & C ' to excecute their beautiful designs. Please see collage photo , IMAGE 10, which illustrates a few of these beautiful organic form designs.
During this early period they were mainly designing furniture and interiors for exclusive very high end furniture companies and exclusive private clients . In 1956 the pair decided that they wanted the general public to also have access to good quality design with a high aesthetic quality and decided to open their own factory and brand , 'Home' , with this intention. Their designs for 'Home' more often than not were finished in teak mahogany or rosewood with restrained black stove...
