Gary Ernest Smith Still-life Paintings

American, b. 1942

Realist painter Gary Ernest Smith often gets compared to Regionalist artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood,  in their shared affection for depicting wide swaths of land and rural characters. The American West’s rocky canyons, deserts and pastures come to life on the canvas through a level of stark realism that’s devoid of pretense or extravagance. Smith's art reflects life, the land and hard work in a way that brings the viewer closer and builds appreciation for the subject.

Born in rural Oregon, Smith took to art at a very young age. His parents fostered his talent, giving him the freedom to follow his vision. Before he was out of high school, Smith had sold a number of his paintings and later worked at an art gallery owned by his aunt.

Smith attended Eastern Oregon College, earning a bachelor's degree in fine art. He went on to pursue graduate school, but the military drafted him for service during the Vietnam War before he could finish. After his military deployment, he studied at Brigham Young University, where he finally received his master’s degree.

Smith's work began to receive national attention in the early 1980s and was soon displaying his work at galleries and museums around the country. Notable museums — such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Phoenix Museum of Art — have displayed his work, and his pieces belong to private collections around the world. In the late 1990s, writer Donal Hagerty published a book showcasing Smith's work, titled Holding Ground: the Art of Gary Ernest Smith.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Smith has painted religious-themed murals and smaller projects for temples and churches throughout the world. Living in Utah with his wife, Judy, Smith remains a prolific creator of realist paintings and murals.

Beach Grass, Twilight
By Marc Dalessio
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Artist Bio Marc Dalessio was born in 1972 in Los Angeles, California. Even in his earliest years, it was evident that his passion was art. In 1989 he started at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he focused on both art and biology. During his time in Santa Cruz, Marc experimented with different schools of painting and spent much of his spare time studying the history and culture of the profession. He finished his outstanding academic career, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, in 1992. After university, Marc moved to Florence, Italy, where he spent the next eight years developing his style and refining his technique. Initially, Marc studied under Svetlan Kracsyna at Il Bisonte International School of Graphic Arts, where he earned a master printmaker degree. From there he went on to train as a portraitist at a small traditional painting atelier. Marc has emerged as a true master of his craft. Whether his work depicts an Indian landscape or an Italian businessman, the lines and color in his paintings attempt to reveal the nature of his subjects. In his portraits, he works to find the essence of the model, trying to use the true character of the individual to decide the mood of the painting. His plein air landscapes, which range in subject from exotic locations around the world to his own backyard, attempt to capture both the present and the history of the environment, touching the soul with his own unique view of the scenery. In all his works, his dedication to light and color, and the subtly of his subjects, enraptures even the most casual observer. Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas)
By Dan Rupe
Located in Hudson, NY
Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe 22 x 22 inches oil on linen canvas Signed on reverse Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life. In this work, three vibrant peach colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people. Read below for an amusing profile written about the artist in 2003: You‘ve likely seen him on the streets of Hudson, seated before his canvas in a multi-colored paint daubed t-shirt and shorts, his straw hat providing shade for all but his tanned forearms and knees. His splattered Technicolor Walkman tape player...
