Georg Jensen Link Bracelets

Over the course of its long history, the legendary Danish silverware firm Georg Jensen has partnered with a range of designers, widening its jewelry offerings from delicate filigree to chunky modern pieces.

Although Georg Jensen today is known the world over for its silver, the brand’s namesake founder began his creative career in a different medium, training as a ceramicist and sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before opening his own porcelain studio. It is that artistic background, however, that laid the foundation for Jensen’s eventual silversmithing — and a thread that continues today with the company’s distinctively sculptural, ornately detailed jewelry.

In 1901, Jensen left his ceramics practice to apprentice for Mogens Ballin, the master silversmith who also had a background as a painter. By 1904, he would establish Georg Jensen, now a global brand with more than 1,000 stores worldwide and a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen of Denmark.

Like much of the work of the Art Nouveau movement of which he was a part, Jensen’s early creations erased the barrier between art and craft, bridging form and function for pieces that demonstrated masterful artistry in both. His silverware was immediately a commercial success and he was a pioneer in using steel in cutlery.

Jensen’s jewelry pieces — his pendants, rings and more, crafted most often in silver during the early 1900s — display a celebration of nature, rendering flora and fauna in silver, gold and gemstones. Fish and full-bloom daisies are charming motifs in his vintage sterling-silver brooches and necklaces, while semiprecious stones such as malachite and coral were integrated as embellishments.

Creatives with Georg Jensen jewelry in their portfolios include architect Edvard Kindt Larsen; designers Arne Jacobsen, Jean Nouvel and Ilse Crawford; artist Henning Koppel and silversmiths Vivianna Torun and Ibe Dahlquist. Such a transcendence of medium — a continuation of Art Nouveau sensibility — has resulted in over a century of stunningly creative, varied designs.

In a country with no shortage of design talent, Georg Jensen has long been somewhat of a national treasure — and sometimes even a political statement. In 1940, five years after Jensen died, Arno Malinowski’s “King’s Emblem” pin became widely recognized as a symbol of resistance to the Nazi regime. Its influence is global, too: In 2014, Murray Moss penned Georg Jensen: Reflections, a Rizzoli-published retrospective marking more than a century of business for the brand.

Is a beautiful sleek piece with plain curved surfaces crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with high polished finish. It is broad hollow cuff expanding towards the centre, fitted with invisible hinge at the back and with a discrete push-button opening at the front as a lock. When is viewed in profile, from the side, the shape echoes a Viking axe head. Weight: 100.6 Grams, (64.48 Dwt). Size: Fit a wrist up to 6.5 Inches (16.5 Cm). Measurements: The widest measure is 52 mm (2.04 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with Danish post 1945 hallmarks, the maker's mark, the silver assay mark and signed, "GEORG JENSEN 925S 107 S/M NJD [monogram]". *NJD = Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel. Nanna Ditzel, born in 1923. Was a Danish designer graduated from the furniture department of the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Has been studying under prof. Kaare Klint at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen. Nanna Ditzel is working with experimental and industrial design furniture, textiles, silver, faience and glass. Has experimented with the use of split-level living for indoors and outdoors. The ideas have been carried through in playgrounds, children libraries and showrooms. Freelance designer, she has a design office and showrooms in London. Nanna Ditzel started independent design office in 1946 together with Jorgen Ditzel. The co-operation lasted until the death of Jorge Ditzel in 1961. Nanna Ditzel created many designs for Georg Jensen, mostly jewelry although she also created some hollowware. The relationship between the couple and the Silversmith began when Nanna decided to start designing jewelry as something she could do at home while her children slept. Soon after, a jewelry competition sponsored by A. Michelsen arose, and her designs had won first prize. Later on, in 1954, Finn Juhl, who was developing the 50th anniversary exhibition, passed the design work off for the exhibition to the Ditzels. Five pieces of jewelry were created for this exhibit, which were very well received. Further jewelry designs were created, and many of these pieces would go on to win various awards and prizes. In 1968, Nanna Ditzel remarried to Kurt Heide and relocated to London where they continued to work in the realm of design, establishing their own company Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd. In 1986, her second husband passed away, and she moved back to Denmark, continuing her work. In recent years, Ditzel has focused mainly on furniture design, such as the Trinidad chair in 1993, however this design has also led to the further refinement for her jewelry pieces such as the bracelet #389 in 1994. Ditzel has won many major awards during her long career and has had her work exhibited all over the world. She received the silver and gold medals at the Milan Tirennale (1954 and 1960), the Lunning Prize (with Jorgen Ditzel in 1954) and a gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in 1990, and the Thorvald Bindesboll Medal in 1999. She has also taken on the title of Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, Honorable Royal Designer ( 1996). From Georg Jensen Hollowware...

This vintage bracelet is the model 169 and has been crafted with ultra modernist patterns. Composed by twenty-two kinetic movable semi circulars links, made up in plain solid .925/.999 sterling silver with high polished finish. Fitted at the end with a flat hook as a security lock. Hallmarks Stamped with the post 1945 maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the silver and signed, "GEORG JENSEN STERLING DENMARK 169". Astrid Fog (1911-1993) In 1969, Astrid Fog released her first jewelry collection for Georg Jensen, and is noted for her modernist sensibilities and combinations of simple geometric shapes, such as circles, squares, and rectangles. Her jewelry is distinctive in its large bold shapes, often utilizing lightweight, hollow silver forms. Although unconventional, her jewelry stands as a testament of the fashions of her time period. Fog is also associated with Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufacture and designs clothing as well as lamps. (From GEORG JENSEN HOLLOWWARE, THE SILVERFUND COLLECTION, David A. Taylor & Jason W. Laskey, 2003). Georg Jensen Georg Jensen is the most famous Danish silversmith and jewelry designer that ever lived. He is world-renowned for his refined and intricate mastery. The simple elegance of his works and the emphasis on fine craftsmanship, the hallmarks of Georg Jensen products, are recognized around the world. Many of Georg Jensen's jewelry pieces are true works of art, honored to this day. He was one of the greatest representatives of the artistic movement known as "Art Nouveau". Jensen made his first piece of jewelry in 1899, a silver and silver and gilt "Adam and Eve" belt buckle. In 1901, Jensen abandoned ceramics and began again as a silversmith and designer with the master, Mogens Ballin. This led Jensen to make a landmark decision, when in 1904, he risked what small capital he had and opened his own little silversmith at 36 Bredgade in Copenhagen. Jensen's training in metalsmithing along with his education in the fine arts allowed him to combine the two disciplines and revive the tradition of the artist craftsman. Soon, the beauty and quality of his Art Nouveau creations caught the eye of the public and his success was assured. The Copenhagen quarters were greatly expanded and before the end of the 1920s, Jensen had opened retail in Berlin (1909), London (1921), and New York City (1924). The New York retail store, Georg Jensen Inc. (New York, NY), was founded and operated independently as a family business by Frederik Lunning...
