Giacomo Balla Prints and Multiples

Italian, 1871-1958

Giacomo Balla was born in Turin in 1871. Since he was a young boy, when he began to attend the Accademia Albertina, he dedicated his studies to the violin and painting. His first artistic accomplishment dates back to 1894, a self-portrait. In 1895, Balla moved to Rome with his mother and then in 1900, he moved to Paris for several months. His early years as a painter indicate an interest in the divisionist paintings of Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Giovanni Segantini, Impressionism and French Post-Impressionism. In 1910, together with his pupils Gino Severini and Umberto Boccioni, he signed the Manifesto of the Futurist Painters. It is in 1912, with works of art such as the famous Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash, that Balla’s art begins to show clear futuristic characteristics, demonstrating a special focus for the objective analysis of detail. Also in 1912, Balla made a provocative gesture with which he auctioned off all of his artwork and declared himself dead, still famous, the phrase pronounced on this occasion, “Balla is dead. Here are sold the works of art of the late Balla,” that marks the clear intention of the artist to deny himself and provoke the public, pushing him towards a reexamination of the values of art. Between the end of 1912 and 1914, the artist painted the Iridescent Compenetration, paintings in which the abstractionism of the composition and the geometry of the shapes prevail. In 1915, together with Fortunato Depero, he signed the Manifesto of the Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe. Towards the end of the Thirties, Balla’s futurist production was always more sporadic; the artist gradually returned to a more figurative painting. During his last years, Balla painted according to a realistic naturalism, that however, even if occasional, he had never completely abandoned.

His work depicted a wide range of subjects, from musicians to nature, including a series of woodcuts based on William Blake's ""Songs of Innocence and Experience." Larkin also wrote a textbook, ""Design: The Search for Unity."" It was his work with lithography, an 18th-century printmaking process, for which he was best known. His last local exhibit was a retrospective at The University of Minnesota Weisman Museum in 2005. ""Sometimes I start the artistic process from a literary source - Adam and Eve, the Egyptian nature gods, or classical Greek themes but sometimes I start from nature. Trees have always been a favorite subject. I see trees as people, as vertical objects...

Located in Houston, TX
Abstract figurative woodblock print of a beach landscape with a boat. The print is stamped by the artist and titled and editioned in pencil. This print is editioned 47 of 86 and the print is not currently framed. Artist Biography: Born in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1924, John Biggers studied at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) under Viktor Lowenfeld and muralist Charles White. In 1943, Biggers' mural, Dying Soldier, was included in the exhibition curated by Lowenfeld, Young Negro Art, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After serving in the United States Navy, Biggers transferred to Pennsylvania State University where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as his doctorate in art education. In 1949, Biggers accepted a faculty position at Texas State University for Negroes (now Texas Southern University) in Houston, where he founded and chaired the art department until his retirement. In the early 50s, he won prizes for his work at annual exhibitions held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Dallas Museum of Art. In 1957, he traveled to Africa on a UNESCO fellowship to study Western African cultural traditions, becoming one of the first black artists to study the culture first-hand rather than through library research. His work was profoundly influenced by his experiences in Africa. He was known for his murals, but also for his drawings, paintings, and lithographs, and was honored by a major traveling retrospective exhibition from 1995 to 1997. He created archetypal imagery that spoke positively to the rich and varied ethnic heritage of African Americans, long before the Civil Rights era drew...
