Invader Figurative Prints

French, b. 1969

French artist Invader stages art “invasions” in cities around the world. He installs pixelated pieces inspired by 8-bit arcade video game characters on the walls of buildings in busy urban areas. Many of these mosaics depict the iconic aliens from the 1978 game Space Invaders, but Invader also uses characters from games like Super Mario Bros. and Pac-Man. He describes his work as contemporary street art. Though known for his public art, Invader also makes smaller-scale abstract prints and tile kits.

The real name of the man behind the Invader persona is purported to be Franck Slama. However, he keeps his identity private and his face a secret, wearing a mask in public and working under the cloak of night. Invader told The Talks magazine that not even his parents know about his life as a mosaicist — they think he works in the construction industry as a tiler.

Born in Paris in 1969, Invader grew up playing the ‘70s and ‘80s video games he now emulates in tile. He went on to graduate from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is believed to have begun tagging the streets of his native city with urban artist Zevs at the end of the 1990s. In 1998, he branched out on his own with the “Space Invaders” project.

Invader chose 8-bit characters as the subject of his work because he sees them as the icons of our digital world. He seeks not only to free the characters from their video games but also to liberate art itself from museums and institutions. Each "invasion" begins by scouting the city and finding the perfect spots for anywhere from 20 to 50 of his installations. Invader's creations have appeared in 79 cities in 20 different countries.

While committed to bringing art to the streets, Invader has shown his street art at museums and galleries around the globe. His solo exhibitions include Almine Rech Gallery in Paris, Citylights Gallery in Melbourne, Lazarides Gallery in London, PMQ in Hong Kong and Mima Museum in Brussels. His work is also immensely popular at art auctions and sells for tens of thousands of dollars.

Taera Bretland - Blaeu British Isles
By Kristjana Williams
Located in New York, NY
Kristjana S Williams Taera Bretland - Blaeu British Isles, 2021 Giclée on Matt Smooth Fine Art Cotton 300 gsm paper Boldly signed and dated on the lower right front and pencil numbered on the lower left front by the artist 18 × 25 inches Unframed Hand signed and numbered 95/275 Story behind the artwork: A celebration of life on the British Isles, ‘Taera Bretland’ translates as ‘Clear Britain’, the islands of Great Britain here sitting in a crystal clear sea. This stunning map based artwork reveals fascinating details in every corner, but not necessarily where you might expect them… An aqua glow from the surrounding ocean lifts the land closer, whispering of its treasured secrets and cherished achievements. Here, the snaking Thames weaves its way not just through the capital, but across the whole country, connecting counties and unifying these Great British Isles, feeding colour popping flora and fauna along its path. Iconic and beloved landmarks rise like beacons, marking the steady flow of irrepressible revolution and impressive invention. In the spotlight, Murdoch’s ill-fated Titanic, Wren’s triumphant St Paul’s and Davy’s revolutionary lamp, rubbing noses with literary pioneers Dickens, Austen and Golding, and British icons Churchill and Chaplin. A bejewelled Ostrich, former resident at the Tower, stands haughtily atop the Truman Brewery; a regal stag, dapper in thimble hat and coiled suit of measuring tape, heads towards Saville Row’s Golden Mile; the subtropical splendour of Tresco Abbey has left its island home to perch in the Scottish Isles and The White Chapel Gallery, sits proudly, testament to Britain’s ‘New Generation’ post war art. A teasing glimpse of the continent affirms Great Britain's close ties with its European neighbours; an early Breeches Buoy rescue device symbolises unity in the face of threat and danger. About Kristjana S. Williams: Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams studied graphic design and illustration at Central St Martins, and quickly gained critical acclaim as Creative Director of 'Beyond the Valley', a position she held for eight years. In 2011 she began creating fine art pieces as well as illustrating books and designing interior items. Her designs are inspired by nature, and her technique involves digitally and physically layering nature upon nature to mirror the symmetry that exists in all living things. Each piece is its own magical universe of exotic botanicals and vibrant animals. Described by the New York Times as part of the ‘new antiquarian movement’, Kristjana’s three dimensional original work, Limited Edition prints and interior products feature Victorian engravings, which the artist has blended with verdant and exotic flora and fauna to stunning effect. Animals and insects are intertwined with lavish foliage, layered over ancient shipping maps...

The work is hand signed and numbered by Invader on the label on the back. Rubik Country Life belongs to a limited edition of 431 copies. Back in 2005, French artist Invader, created his first work made of Rubik cubes. Since then, the artist has developed his Rubikcubism works, art created using Rubik cubes as a medium. One of Invader's Rubikcubism series works pays homage to music in ten different works entitled "Rubik Low Fidelity". Those ten works were based on the artist's favourite music album covers and were presented for the exhibition "Top 10" at Jonathan Levine Gallery in 2009. This work presented here is based on art rock band Roxy Music's "Country Life" album cover. ABOUT THE ARTIST Invader is the pseudonym used by this renowned urban French artist. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and began to create his works in the streets of the French capital in the late 90 for the same reason that many artists of his time: the difficult access by the artist to galleries and museums. Even though his art is developed in the street, unlike other urban artists, Invader does not use spray or stencil to create his works. Maybe his fame shot up by taking part in the documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop", he is also the nephew of the street artist Thierry Guetta, better known as Mr. Brainwash. In this documentary other urban artists also star such as Shepard Fairey (Obey) or Banksy. His work revolves around a personal project called, like the 80’s videogame, "Space Invaders". This project involves the placement of multiple mosaics depicting spaceships, like the ones shown in that game, on every city in the world. These mosaics are found in certain places, carefully chosen by the artist and silently "invade" the planet, forming together a worldwide art installation. These mosaics are made up of small ceramic tiles that Invader adheres to the walls. Due to the worldwide success of this artist and his high value in the market, many people have tried to take off these mosaics from their locations and gain profit of them. The artist alerts, the glues used are so strong that to rip off the work from its location it would have to be destroyed. Although the original idea takes its origin from Taito’s videogame, the artist has created many characters of his own with different colors and shapes. He prefers to work on the street but also complements this activity with exhibitions in galleries and museums. Thanks to his anonymity, (only his small team of collaborators knows about identity) he can enjoy his own shows as another visitor. Invaders work can be found in various formats. Each mosaic installed has one and only one replica that can be acquired by the private collector. But we can also install our own mosaics with his limited editions of "Invader Kits...
