- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 19, 2025Jacques Callot was famous for being an artist. In 1611, Callot entered the workshop of Tempesta, a famous Italian engraver, for three years. In 1614, he left Rome for Florence in the service of Cosimo II de Medici. Callot produced drawings and etchings that drew influence from Flemish art and Mannerist works in Roman churches. His independent career began in Florence in 1612 when he started work in the Medici court, where he was employed to make pictorial records of entertainments such as fairs and festivals and where he also drew and etched courtiers, beggars and other characters, excelling particularly at caricatures. Returning to his native France at the latter end of his career, Callot’s work became markedly soberer as he documented the horrors of the 30 years of war in his Miseries of War series, which would continue to influence the artistic representation of conflict and social injustice into the 19th and 20th centuries. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Jacques Callot art.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 19, 2025Jacques-Louis David was famous for his influence on the field of painting. During the 19th century, the French artist’s work helped to define the neoclassical style. Today, he is well-known for his dramatic depictions of scenes from the Bible, 19th-century history and antiquity. Among his most famous paintings are The Oath of the Horatii, The Death of Marat, Napoleon Crossing the Alps and The Coronation of Napoleon. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of fine art.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024No, Jacques Marcel was not a real designer. He was a fictional character mentioned on the television show I Love Lucy in the 1956 episode “Lucy Gets a Paris Gown.” In the show, Lucy wants to purchase an expensive gown from a Parisian fashion designer, but Ricky attempts to trick her by sewing a Jacques Marcel label into a dress made of a flour sack. Today, the faux Marcel-designed frock is displayed at the Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz Museum in Jamestown, New York. Although his dress wasn't made of burlap, Hubert de Givenchy did unveil a dress nicknamed the Sack dress in the 1950s. It featured a straight cut and was fashioned out of soft materials, giving it a fluid, draped appearance. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of vintage dresses.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 10, 2025Three famous artworks of Jacques-Louis David are the Oath of the Horatii, The Death of Marat and The Death of Socrates. Produced in 1787, the latter is the oldest of the three and today is part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York. David painted the Oath of the Horatii in 1784, and the work is now on view at the Louvre in Paris, France. Portraying the moments after the death of a leading figure of the French Revolution, the Death of Marat dates back to 1793. It hangs in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, Belgium. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of fine art.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024A few things characterized the work of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. By the end of his career, he was best known for being a skilled ensemblier, a term for a designer who not only makes furniture and decorates spaces but personally crafts each and every piece required in the space, from doorknobs to sofas. This practice ensured that the space was harmonious and consistent with Ruhlmann’s vision, and it contributed to the lasting popularity of his designs. While the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements were early influences, he is renowned for the modernity of his Art Deco designs, which reflected the opulent nature of the era, involving luxurious materials like Macassar ebony, amboyna burl, ivory and precious metals and skilled craftsmanship and construction techniques. Explore a variety of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann furniture on 1stDibs.
