Bust of Bacchante by Auguste Baptiste Clesinger, Rome, 1857
By Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A large bronze bust showing a beautiful young woman depicted as a Bacchante, the Greek Goddess of Wine, her head festooned with grape branches. The bust is supported by an integral bronze plinth that at the back is inscribed with the name of the sculptor, J. Clesinger Rome 1857 dating the bronze to the time when the sculptor was 33 years old. The sculptor whose full name was Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger was born in 1813 in Besancon in Southern France. His father, Georges-Philippe, was a sculptor and trained Auguste in art. Auguste first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Vicomte Jules de Vaidahon. At the 1847 Salon, he created a sensation with his Woman bitten by a serpent, produced from life-casts from his model Apollonie Sabartier who was a notorious Parisian and the mistress of many perhaps even of Clesinger himself. Later he also produced this bust of her as Bacchante. In private life, the sculptor was awarded one of France’s highest honour, the knight’s cross...

English Antique Marble Bust “Lady Layard” by John Warrington Wood ca. 1870
Located in Shippensburg, PA
JOHN WARRINGTON WOOD British, 1839-1886 Bust of a Woman, almost certainly depicting Lady Layard (1870) Carrara marble signed to the reverse "WARRINGTON WOOD SCULPT ROMA 1870" Item # 405UGP17Q A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). It is interesting to view the painting completed by Vicente Palmaroli y González...

Large American White Marble Bust of a Gentleman by Randolph Rogers
By Randolph Rogers
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Fine 19th century white carved marble bust of a gentleman with mustache wearing a Toga. Signed: Randolph Rogers, Rome. Randolph John Rogers (July 6, 1825, Waterloo, New York – January 15, 1892, Rome, Italy) was an American Neoclassical sculptor. An expatriate who lived most of his life in Italy, his works ranged from popular subjects to major commissions, including the Columbus Doors at the U.S. Capitol and American Civil War monuments. Born in Waterloo, New York, he spent most of his childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He developed an interest in wood cuts and wood engraving, and moved to New York City about 1847, but was unsuccessful in finding employment as an engraver. While working as a clerk in a dry-goods store, his employers discovered his native talent as a sculptor and provided funds for him to travel to Italy. He began study in Florence in 1848, where he studied briefly under Lorenzo Bartolini. He then opened a studio in Rome in 1851. He resided in that city until his death in 1892. He began his career carving statues of children and portrait busts of tourists. He was not happy working with marble consequently all his marble statues were copied in his studio by Italian artisans under his supervision, from an original produced by him in another material. This also enabled him to profit from his popular works. His first large-scale work was Ruth Gleaning...
