Although born in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello spent most of his adult life in Paris where he became one of the most successful and prolific posterists of all time (he created more than 500). He is known as the father of modern advertising for his captivating images that could be understood in a second, and remembered for a lifetime. The key to his work was creating a metaphor for a product that was so memorable that it could be absorbed instantly on a busy boulevard. A French original lithograph "Job" poster by Jules Cheret picturing an elegant lady from the end of the 19th-century advertising for cigarette paper. It rests in its original gold leaf frame and was edited by Ateliers Cheret. I added the pictures of the matching one that will be featured next week. Jules Chéret, ( 1836-1933), one of the pioneering poster artists of the late 19th century, was quick to realize not only the aesthetic but also the commercial potential of his medium caused by changes in technology and society.
