“Somalia” is a very quiet seeming painting of a young woman pausing in the field from her work as though hearing something. It is reminiscent of Jean-Francois Millet’s “The Angelus” where the peasants pause in the field from their work upon hearing a distant church ringing the bells calling for prayer. There the similarities end. John’s work is rich in yellows and oranges and the complementary blues and purples. The horizon is low giving a monumentality to the lone figure called Somalia. The title of the piece references the country of Somalia with its rich history dating back 5,000 years and located in the Horn of Africa. This strong looking figure can stand metaphorically for the strength of a country that has withstood a tumultuous history full of political strife.
