Lau Chun Art
Chinese, b. 1942
Born in Kiangsi, China in 1942, Lau Chun demonstrated interest in art at the age of ten. After graduating from high school, he entered the Canton School of Fine Art for two years. With a solid foundation in the ordered and exacting style of classical Asian artists, he left for Hong Kong.
In 1962, while living in Hong Kong, Lau was hired by Francis Bodo, a noted Mexican artist, to paint murals and mosaics. He worked with Bodo for eight years- the mosaic backgrounds in many of Lau''s paintings are not by accident.
In 1968, the Revox Corporation of Switzerland bestowed a two-year scholarship grant upon Lau enabling him to study extensively in Europe. Revox sponsored exhibits of his work in Hamburg and Copanhagen at the end of the two year period. Attracted by the light and color of the Hawaiian islands, the artist settled in Honolulu in 1971.
While Lau has been inspired by the French Impressionists, he developed a distinctive style that redefines the tenants of classical impressionism. The uniquely textured paint surface is abstract up close but, at a distance, perfectly captures the spirit and values of his subjects.

The main focus of my painting is underwater world.
I draw my inspiration during scuba diving. Underwater I have learnt not only about the many life-forms, but the shapes and colors of everything in that realm continue to blow my mind. I feel like I am in another dimension.
I am an artist one of the new pioneers in the growing field of underwater painting and Andre Laban follower. I developed my own special course of underwater painting and approved it in PADI. By teaching people scuba diving and underwater painting I open a new world of inspiration, artistry and creativity. I help people to experience artistic way to live.
Scuba Divers witness the changes happening in the ocean – and can be among the first to raise the awareness of others to these growing problems. Nowadays most scuba divers have underwater cameras, to record the treasures and tragedies happening underwater – in this case evidence of the destruction of marine life. Art too, is a very effective tool and medium to communicate these messages.
My art is my language. I would like to make people more human, more spiritual, to find their soul, love and kindness through the reunion with nature. So I am very happy to have opportunity to attract people by my art to the nature, in diver to find an art person and show a new reality – underwater world to art person. I believe that with my paintings more people will fall in love with the world of the sea, and become involved in the protection of our oceans for future generations to enjoy and wonder at. That is what I wish to come of these works and this experience in my life.
