Lisa Sanditz

American

In her richly colored depictions of everything from farms to automobile plants, artist Lisa Sanditz looks at the natural world and the industrial forces humanity has built upon it. Known for her landscape paintings and ceramics, Sanditz uses bright, dazzling colors and expressive brushstrokes to explore what our world looks like at the intersection of ecology and economy.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Sanditz began her studies in 1994 at the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Minnesota's Macalester College in the mid-90s and completed her MFA at Pratt Institute, in New York City, in 2001. Creative Time and United Technologies commissioned Sanditz — alongside artists Alex Katz and Gary Hume — to paint outdoor murals around lower Manhattan in 2005. A few years later she was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and awarded a residency in 2009 at Bard College.

For her 2019 exhibition “Deep Woods,” Sanditz explored in vivid landscape paintings and sculptural works the impact that human beings have had on the natural landscape. The exhibit, hosted by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, is one of the many Sanditz has had over the course of her career. She has had solo exhibitions at CRG Gallery in New York, Acme Gallery in Los Angeles, Huxley-Parlour Gallery in London and more. Sanditz’s work is held in the collections of Harvard University’s Fogg Museum, the Saint Louis Art Museum and Cornell University’s Johnson Museum of Art
