Louis Berthomme Saint-Andre Drawings and Watercolor Paintings

French, 1905-1977
Louis Bethomme Saint Andre (1905-1977) is one of the great representatives of French figurative painting in the 20th century. A pupil of Cormon at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and of the Pierre Laurens studio, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1924 to 1929, winning the Silver Medal. He retained from his training a taste for well-learnt techniques, but from his earliest works he was a modernist: his constructions show decomposed forms inspired by Cézanne, while retaining a keen sense of rigour. He never strayed from realism, but his highly coloured, sometimes incisive palette and his freedom of representation gave his painting a bite and acidity that placed him among the great talents of his time. Winner of the Abd-el-Tif prize (1925), he spent time in Algeria, where he learned how to make light vibrate in the colours of his palette. Between the wars, his inspiration was close to surrealism. During the Occupation, he became very "fauve", in reaction to the darkness of the war. Louis' paintings magnify women. His nudes are both sensual and colourful. He also devoted himself to erotic illustrations, where he created more muted atmospheres, where the subject and composition took precedence over colour. He illustrated Verlaine, Crébillon fils and Voltaire's erotic tales. Haute-couture called on his talents. Before the war he exhibited regularly at all the major Salons: from 1928 at the Salon d'Automne, at the Salon des Beaux-Arts (1934 to 1936) and at the Salon des Tuileries from 1935. After the war, he exhibited at the Salon Comparaison and the Salon des peintres Témoins de notre temps, and was president of the Salon du dessin et de la peinture à l'eau. He exhibited internationally, in Europe, the USA and Japan, and in 1977, just before his death, he was awarded the Grand Prix des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps (Bibliography Michel Droit. Berthommé Saint-André. Éditions de la revue moderne, 1981).

Berthomme Saint-André, The Nap, Watercolor, 1925
By Louis Berthomme Saint-Andre
Located in Saint Amans des cots, FR
Watercolor by Louis BERTHOMME SAINT-ANDRE, France, ca.1925. The nap. With frame: 75x60.5 cm - 29.5x23.8 inches, without frame, just the watercolor: 53x39 cm - 20.9x15.35 inches. Signed lower left "Berthomme St André" (see photo). Louis Berthommé Saint-André is a figurative painter, fresco painter, decorator, illustrator, engraver, ceramist and French lithographer born in 1905. He comes from rural and commercial France: his father ran a wine and grocery business. In his youth, Louis Berthommé Saint-André was injured by a kick, which left him with a stiff leg, preventing him from driving, among other things. The family left Oise to settle in Saintes, where the artist studied at La Recouvrance. He entered as a student architect with Georges Naud, responsible for the historical monuments of Charente then, in 1921, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Louis Berthommé Saint-André is one of the great representatives of French figurative painting in the 20th century. He was trained at the School of Fine Arts by two very old masters who died during his training: Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He retains from their training the taste for well-learnt techniques, but from his first works, he is part of modernity. His constructions show decomposed forms inspired by Cézanne, while maintaining a keen sense of rigour. He never strayed from realism, but his very colourful, sometimes incisive palette and his freedom in representation gave his painting a bite and an acidity that placed Louis Berthommé Saint-André among the great talents of his time. Silver medal at the Salon of French Artists where he exhibited from 1924 to 1929, he won the Abd-el-Tif Prise in 1925 and was then the youngest resident of the villa in Algiers. Friend of Jean Launois, in addition to his recognised portraits, he painted Algiers and the Kasbah. His studies of women recall those of Eugène Delacroix, but if his luminous inspiration is due to the Algerian sun, his touch is more Cézanne than purely orientalist. He left Algeria in 1928, to return there in 1931. Before the war, Berthommé Saint-André exhibited regularly in all the major Salons: from 1928 at the Salon d'Automne, at the Salon des Beaux-Arts (1934 to 1936) at the Salon des Tuileries since 1935. His inspiration is close to surrealism . During the Occupation, he became very "fauve", in reaction to the darkness of the war. He joined the Resistance, and collaborated with Vaincre (Resistance newspaper). After the war, he developed a style close to poetic reality (Brianchon, Legueult, Oudot, Terechkovitch, Cavaillès. Caillard, Limouse, and Planson), without however ever being part of the group so called. He is present at the Salon Comparaison, at the Salon of painters Witnesses of our time, is president of the Salon of drawing and water-based painting. He has exhibited solo internationally, in Europe, the USA and Japan in particular. In 1977, he received just before his death, the grand prise of Painters Witnesses of their Time. He died on October 1, 1977 in Paris. Bibliography - Michel Droit. Berthommé Saint-André. Fall to Grace
By Robert Kraiza
Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Fall to Grace" is an original ink and watercolor painting on paper mounted to wood by artist Robert Kraiza measuring 19in height x 9in width. Artist Statement // In my work I invoke a whimsical world inspired by Victorian and Edwardian eras. To me they represent a romantic time period that has roots that extend directly into the modern world, both good and bad. The customs and aesthetics of the period are both fascinating and breathtaking but a vast portion of the population was victim to subjugation. It has since been eradicated on paper but still permeates to this day. I am exploring an imagined supernatural world hidden just out of sight where these woman could escape. This is an evolution from my earlier work set in the same time period with a continuous thread of humans and their animal companions. Through witchcraft these women find strength in their abilities and each other to leave the oppressive world they inhabit behind and escape to the woods to their Covendom, the boundary that defines the territory of their coven. They shed their customs, their corsets, and their concerns at the edge of the forest and gather among the trees to explore their magical potential with their familiars at the side. This body of work is exploring multiple media with a consistent theme and setting; combining watercolor painting, pen and ink illustrations, and graphite drawings. All pieces are created in monochrome on hot press watercolor paper mounted on wood with a gold painted border reminiscent of daguerreotype frames. Watercolor allows me to achieve results ranging from soft ethereal layered washes similar to oil glazes to precise minute details I include in all of my works. Bio // ROBERT KRAIZA (pronounced: cry-zuh) is an illustrator and fine artist who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied Media Arts and Animation at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Interested in many media, he often paints in monochrome watercolor on a small scale, inspired by the Victorian era and whimsical dreams in both his art and personal aesthetic. Depicting fantasy worlds from the hidden life of nineteenth century witches to miniature children...

The Body is a History - Muscular Male Nude, Graphite Drawing on Paper
By Rick Sindt
Located in Chicago, IL
Rick Sindt's knowledge of the male physique is evident in this exquisite drawing of a nude male. The subject sits on the ground with his body twisted away from the viewer. We see the defined musculature of his posterior. The artwork is framed in white wood with a black mat. Rick Sindt The Body is a History graphite on archival paper 12h x 9w in 30.48h x 22.86w cm RIS026 Shifting the historic male gaze into a male-on-male gaze, this body of work anchors its exploration of queer culture in relationships and introspection. Beginning with a survey of several photo archives, I overwhelmingly encountered pictures that fit into two distinct categories: spectacular demonstrations or public displays of sexuality. All of these images were overtly political. Then, I began to find a subset of more intimate images. Typically, these were images submitted by loved ones or donated to foundations after someone’s death. These images depicted common, tender scenes. Working my way through these images, I reflected on D. A. Miller’s assertion that gay identity, to which we have entrusted our politics and ethics, stands in an essentially reductive relation to the queer desires on which it is based. And David Halperin’s argument that, “identity has become the preferred category for thinking about homosexuality. Moreover, it has been promoted at the direct expense of pleasure or feelings or subjectivity.” This left me asking the questions: how is queer culture transmitted if not genealogically? Is there a universal queer experience? What is queer sensibility and subjectivity and can it be visually represented?
