Margot de Taxco Silver Confetti Enamel Peony Flower 1950s Clip On Earrings
By Margot De Taxco
Located in North Attleboro, MA
Gorgeous wearable art by renowned jewelry designer Margot de Taxco. Elegant and fun all at once, these earrings are sterling silver peonies with champlevé white enamel and gold "confetti" flecks throughout. There's a lot of detail to the flowers including dimensional petals and center stamens made of tiny silver dollops. Both pieces marked 925, Hecho En Mexico, Eagle 16 (Margot's personal Eagle Assay stamp). Each measure 1.5"L x 1"W. Very good condition with patina and minor wear from age and use. No enamel loss. Some crazing visible when magnified. About Margot de Taxco: Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. In 1937, forty-one-year-old divorcée Margot Van Voorhies left San Francisco on a trip to Mexico City. Fate threw her into the path of Don Antonio Castillo, who took her to Taxco, a Mexican hotbed for the design, crafting, and production of silver objects, in particular jewelry and housewares. Castillo and Margot married. At the time, Castillo was working for William Spratling, a pioneer in Mexican silversmithing. He brought Margot into the business as a designer, helping her to transform her paper creations into three-dimensional forms in silver. In 1939, the pair, along with other members of Castillo’s family, opened shop as Los Castillo Taller (Taller is Spanish for “Workshop”), with Margot as the top designer. After ten years, the marriage between Castillo and Van Voorhies dissolved, as did their professional association. Margot went on to open her own shop in 1948, taking the name Margot de Taxco, by which she is best known today. At the peak of her career, Margot, who designed each piece herself, had two dozen silversmiths and a dozen enamellists in her employ to execute her vision. Margot attracted talented craftsmen who later went on to cement their own reputations, such as Sigi Pineda, Miguel Melendez...

Margot De Taxco Enamel Link Serpent Bracelet
By Margot De Taxco
Located in Narberth, PA
Margot van Voorhies Carr, professionally known as Margot de Taxco, was a major contributor to the success of Taxco silver. Margot first came to Mexico in 1937 and soon thereafter met and married Don Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo (another well know Mexican silver jewelry artist). During her time with him, he encouraged her to translate her designs from paper to three-dimensional forms in silver. Many early designs of Los Castillo bear the obvious contributions of Margot de Taxco. After divorcing Antonio, Margot went out on her own with a business card that read, “As the stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman”. Margot is most famous for her works in enamels on silver and her devotion to Art Deco, Mayan and Japanese-inspired motifs. Her clients at the time included such Hollywood celebrities as John Wayne and Lana Turner and her vintage silver pieces...
