Mark Gilmore Art

American, b. 1955
I have been active in telling stories with images for over 45 years. My fascination with shapes and textures are my earliest memories and everything I have done in my adult life has revolved around these interests. I learned a lot about color, composition and story telling by stripping all sentimentality from these elements and using them for more than 25 years as a designer.

'Can Hats Favor Fire? Can a Hat Aspire to Higher Things?, ' by Mark Gilmore
By Mark Gilmore
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
The full frontal female figure is suspended in mid-air with both arms in motion, seemingly about to jump off the canvas. The blurred figure is set against a clear, graphic backdrop of reds, black and other dark tones with a turquoise rectangular box framing the torso of the figure. A simple black wooden frame frames the work. "I have been active in telling stories with images for over 45 years. My fascination with shapes and textures are my earliest memories and everything I have done in my adult life has revolved around these interests. I learned a lot about color, composition and story telling by stripping all sentimentality from these elements and using them for more than 25 years as a designer. Although I enjoy the challenge and variety of commissions, my own work is very personal. My work has always been about expressing the otherness and mystery just underneath everyday life. Reacting to the ephemeral nature of life and mortality. All of my personal paintings are just different ways of expressing one moment, one feeling. I’m describing a place I’ve never been with a language I’ve never spoken but I’ve spent my whole life trying to get there because its my home." -- Mark Gilmore...

Sea Birds in Surf
By James Floyd Clymer

Beautiful seascape painting by American artist, James Floyd Clymer (1893-1982). Seabirds, ca.1930. Watercolor and pencil on paper measures 14 x 20 inches. Signed lower margin. SHIPS ROLLED. Matting removed. James Floyd Clymer ( 1893-1982 ) known for his Regionalist style of land, sea and cityscapes, created paintings with an emphasis on color and form. His works possess a clear and simple style, easily understood by the masses. Born in Perkasie Pennsylvania, 20 miles north of Philadelphia, Clymer was the youngest of seven children. Losing his mother during childbirth, he was raised by his eldest sister. He attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, studying Art and Architecture and worked as an Architect in the years following World War I. During this time, Clymer met the artist Gwenyth Waugh, daughter of the renowned marine painter, Frederick Judd Waugh. His thrust then changed from Architect to Artist. Together, the couple travelled to destinations such as Spain and Newfoundland, where they gave birth to their only daughter. In the early 1920's, Clymer and family settled in Provincetown, MA and quickly became associated with notable artists such as Helen Sawyer, Edwin Dickinson...

Large Modernist Abstract Expressionist Gouache Painting Bauhaus Weimar Artist
By Pawel Kontny
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract watercolor or gouache composition bearing the influence of the earlier color-block compositions of Paul Klee. Pawel August Kontny, (Polish-German-American artist) He was born in Laurahuette, Poland, in 1923, the son of a wealthy pastry shop owner. In 1939 he began studying architecture in Breslau where he was introduced to the European masters and to the work of some of the German Expressionists, soon afterward banned as "degenerate artists" and removed from museums throughout Germany by the Nazi regime. His studies were interrupted by World War II. Drafted into the German army, traveling in many countries as a soldier, he sketched various landscapes but in 1945, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Italy. After the war, he studied at the Union of Nuremberg Architects to help design buildings to replace ones destroyed in the war. He recorded his impressions of the local population and the landscapes through his watercolors and drawings. Pawel Kontny thereafter moved to Nuremberg, Germany, becoming a member of the Union of Nuremberg Architects and helping to rebuild the city's historic center. He soon decided to concentrate on his professional art career. He married Irmgard Laurer, a dancer with the Nuremberg Opera. Pavel Kontny 's career as an artist was launched with his participation in an all German exhibition, held at the Dusseldorf Museum in 1952. He held one-man shows in Germany, Switzerland and the United States. During his trip to the United States in 1960, Kontny became instantly enamored with Colorado, and decided to relocate to Cherry Hills with his wife and two children. He quickly established himself in the local art community, being affiliated for a time with Denver Art Galleries and Saks Galleries. His subject matter became the Southwest. During this time he received the Prestigious Gold Medal of the Art Academy of Rome. His extensive travel provided material for the paintings he did using his hallmark marble dust technique. he also worked equally in pastel, watercolor, charcoal and pencil-and-ink. in a style which merged abstraction and realist styles, influenced by Abstract Expressionist painting and South Western American landscapes. In the early 1960s he was one of only a few European-born professional artists in the state, a select group that included Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), a member of the prewar Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, Germany, and Roland Detre (1903-2001), a Hungarian modernist painter. As a Denver, Colorado resident, Pavel Kontny exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States, Germany and Japan. There, he was inspired by frequent trips to Native American pueblos in the Southwest, as well as by the study of the Plains Indians of Montana and Wyoming. Over the years Kontny had a number of students and generously helped young artist by hosting exhibitions at his Cherry Hills home. For many years he generously donated his paintings to support charitable causes in Denver. Influences during his European years included German pastelist C.O. Muller, German Informel painter Karl Dahmen and Swiss artist, Hans Erni. In the early 1950s his painting style showed the influence of the Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905 who had a major impact on the evolution of modern art in the twentieth century in Germany. By the middle of the decade his style incorporated more referential abstraction and total abstraction, resulting in part from his study of Hans Hartung, a German artist based in Paris who exhibited his gestural abstract work in Germany. The American moon landing in 1969 inspired Paul Kontny...

Two male Nudes. Painting.Pastel, carbon pencil, ink on archival paper mounted
By Celso José Castro Daza
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Two Nudes, 2016 by Celso Castro-Daza One of a kind Pastel, carbon pencil, ink on archival paper mounted on board Image size: 40.5 H in. x 55.5 in. W Mounted on acid-free board: 41 H x 56 in. W Drawing on paper is his basic work tool, some are sketches of his surviving works, others are sketches of moments he documents. ____________ Undefined by medium, Celso Castro’s works each carry the presence of the artist’s hand through the transparency of their process. Castro’s oeuvre is strongly divided between his photomontage assemblies and watercolor paintings: the prior is marked by the labor-intensive deconstruction of portrait photographs and the latter, by the seemingly frenzied recreation of a past encounter rendered in the drips and scribbles of paint and ink. Both discriminating in what they reveal of the subject, his photomontage and watercolor portraits exude raw sexuality through the combination of Castro’s mark-making and gaze. Celso Castro’s work is a bare-bulb erotic photo foray into the underbelly of Colombia’s drug world. Castro’s labor-intensive, photo-collage works of drug kingpins, smugglers, hitmen, countrymen, street vendors, soldiers, paramilitaries, kidnappers, and pimps pose showing with pride their erect penises...
