About the Artist: Alfred Wands, a renowned Colorado landscape artist, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated with honors from the Cleveland School of Art. He further honed his skills studying at the Académie Julian in Paris. After returning to Ohio in the late 1920s, Wands taught painting at both the Cleveland School of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1930, Wands moved to Denver to head the art program at Colorado Women's College, where he spent the next 17 years. During this time, he frequently visited Taos, New Mexico, spending eleven summers there between 1930 and 1940, which deeply influenced his work. By 1943, Wands became the Camp Artist at the YMCA of the Rockies, teaching summer art classes. He later became the Chairman of their Religious Programs and Adult Advisory Committees. In 1947, Wands dedicated himself fully to his art, leaving his teaching position at the Women's College. In 1955, he opened a studio and gallery in Estes Park, Colorado, further solidifying his presence in the Colorado art scene. Known as the "Dean of Colorado Landscape Painters," Wands served three terms as the President of the Denver Artists Guild and held the position of Chairman of the Denver Art Commission for 16 years. Original oil on canvas painting by the well known British artist, David Bates. Signed lower right and dated 1886. The canvas has been relined. Condition is very good. The painting is housed in a period ornate gold frame. Overall framed measurements are 19 by 22.75 inches. About: David Bates British, (1840-1921) David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born. Born in Upland, California, Tom Craig became a landscape, portrait and figure painter whose early career was in illustration but whose later focus was fine-art painting. He became a major figure in The California Style* of watercolor painting. As a young student, Craig studied botany at the University of California at Berkeley, and living in Los Angeles, continued botanical studies at Pomona College. With a persistent interest in art, he studied briefly at Chouinard Art Institute* with Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Millard Sheets and Barse Miller.
