Nelson Dawson Art

1859-1941
Painter, printmaker, ceramicist, jeweler, and designer Nelson Ethelred Dawson was a noted member of the English Arts and Crafts movement. Born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1859, he was primarily self-taught in the arts. Following his graduation from the Stamford School for Boys he moved to Chelsea, London, opening a painting studio with painter Ernest Dade, where he began a career as a painter of marine and nautical life. He took courses in silversmithing and enameling from famed English master enameler Alexander Smith, which allowed him to expand his professional oeuvre during the rise of the decorative art scene. He quickly became acquainted with leading artists of the time, including Frank Bragnwyn and James Whistler, and was elected an associate member of the Royal Watercolor Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. In 1893 he married artist Edith Robinson, and together they founded a design studio in which they produced objets d'art such as enameled boxes, jewelery, and ceramics. Studio Magazine highlighted their work in an 1897 article about bohemian artists in London, and they began to receive major commissions, among them the organ at the Holy Trinity Church in Chelsea; the gates of Hull Guildhall; and, in 1899, the ceremonial trowel used by Queen Victoria for the groundbreaking of the Victoria and Albert Museum. When the couple closed their studio in 1909, Dawson focused on printmaking, returning once more to his beloved nautical themes. Living for a time on the Yorkshire Coast, he was particularly inspired by the traditional fishing boats and the fishermen whose livelihoods were slowly being replaced by mechanized steam trawlers. He traveled throughout Europe cataloging his visits to ports in Italy and France. With the outbreak of World War I, he created a series of etchings recounting the role of Brits in maritime clashes with Germany. He was also an illustrator, creating works for works such as the book A Wanderer in London, a travelogue by E.V. Lucas (1904). Dawson continued to work in a variety of media until the late 1930s. After retirement he donated his collection to the Stamford School, and in 2008 the school held a retrospective of his work. Georgetown University held an exhibition of his marine views called "Etched by the Sea" in 2009. Dawson died in London in 1941.

Chas Laborde - Paris - Capucine's Boulevard - Original Etching Dimensions : 13 x 10". Paper : Rives vellum. Edition : 225 copies. 1927 From Tableaux de Paris, Emile-Paul Freres, Paris Chas LABORDE Charles Laborde was born in Buenos Aires on August 8, 1886. He was the youngest of the five sons of Adolphe-Sylvestre Laborde-Pinou, a Basque-Bearne millionaire who had made a fortune selling spirits to the Indians and luxury goods imported from France to wealthy Argentines. The family returned to France when Charles was six months old. His mother died when he was two. He spent his childhood at their family château d’Escout outside Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Pyrenees. His brothers went to a boarding-school, his father was often in Paris on business, and little Charles was left to his devices. Though it was a lonely childhood, he was a darling of his generous and magnanimous father. Charles got his early drawing skills from a village artist and found support in his brother Jean-Felix. Charles frequently accompanied his father visiting artisans and helped him choose de luxe objects to be sold in Argentine. He first attended the Rollin college in Paris, then a lyceum in Pau, where he lived with full board and lodging after his father’s death in 1901. From childhood Charles wanted to be an artist and tried several pseudonyms for himself: Ch. Laborde, Carlos Laborde,Carlos Edrobal and Carl Lab. He started wearing a velvet suit and a large hat. At 17, the timid shortsighted teenager wearing big glasses was expelled from college for smoking and drinking alcohol and went to Paris into the custody of his elder brother Jean-Felix, who carried on his father’s business. Charles enrolled in the prestigious l’Académie Julian, studying under Henri Royer and Marcel Baschet. Simultaneously he was a pupil of William Bouguereau and Luc-Olivier Merson at l’École des Beaux-Arts. The latter was famous for being the designer of the 50 and 100 franc banknotes, and he believed that he was teaching a “little Daumier”. In England, where he went every year from 1905 to 1914 with the family of his friend Cooper, a classmate at l’Académie Julian, he found not only his pseudonym Chas (short for Charley), but also the land of his dreams. Peculiarities of London and its inhabitants were reflected in drawings of William Hogarth and Thomas Rowlandson, whose album The Microcosm of London (1808) prompted Charles to make his London Streets Scenes (1928). Owing to those trips Charles took a liking to the atmosphere of England and its reserved and terse humor. In 1905 the château d’Escout and the Buenos Aires Commercial Fund were sold. After coming into inheritance, Laborde became financially independent and obtained an atelier in Montmartre at 11 bis Rue des Saules. His neighbors were de la Butte, Francis Carco and Pierre Mac Orlan, who sympathized with the easy-going young man with a positive attitude to life. His friend Pierre Falke...

While this is probably a military airport, Kent Hagerman still shows it at its futuristic best. Hagerman was an amazing draftsman who managed to get fantastic detail into his work. This is really a portrait of a plane -- the Fairchild C-119. The words 'United States Air Force' on the side of the plane date it to 1947 or later, after the Air Force split from the Army. The design featured the 'twin boom' clearly showing in this etching. Thanks to this feature it was called the Flying Boxcar. About 1100 were built and used until 1955. It was also used by the Chinese Air...

Mary Jones from Glasgow to Bideford

By Nelson Dawson

Located in New Orleans, LA

The Nova Scotia Brig, Mary Jones, bound from Pugwash to Liverpool, lost its bearings in poor visibility on 14th December, 1849. There was believed to have been some argument amongst its crew as to the ship’s true whereabouts when the Captain wrongly identified Bardsey Island. But the Captain’s bearings stood and the Mary Jones fate was sealed when it began its misguided journey along the treacherous Gower coastline. The ship hit the rocks near Knave Bank and, with little hope of saving the Mary Jones in the heavy sea, most of the crew abandoned ship. Seaman Thomas Pollas, however, was not as lucky as his fellow crewmen as he had become entangled in the rigging when the Mary Jones’ mast had crashed onto the deck during the ship’s collision with the rocks. His body was discovered a few days later at Salthouse Mere. Nelson Dawson...
