Paul Sormani Corner Cupboards

Italian, 1817-1877

Paul Sormani, counted among the most elite Parisian ébénistes of the 19th century, used the foundation of Louis XV and XVI styles for his meubles de luxe (luxurious furnishings).

Sormani received enormous attention as one of Paris’ finest and most influential ébénistes and earned worldwide acclaim by displaying his pieces at many of the world’s leading exhibitions. At the 1867 Exhibition Universelle in Paris the celebrated designer received an award and was described in the exhibition journal as “...a distinguished ébéniste of Paris, whose works deservedly attracted the attention of the public, and received the marked approval of the connoisseur.”

Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, decorated her palaces with beautiful creations by Paul Sormani whose designs were of a select few favored by the Empress. Revivals of Louis XV and XVI pieces were in high demand among affluent Parisians, and Sormani created many of the finest and most important furnishings of the period.

Leon Jallot Pair of Inlaid Amaranth and Nero Portoro Encoignures, c 1925, Signed
By Léon Jallot, Maurice and Léon Jallot, Maurice Jallot
Located in Los Angeles, CA
An incredible and important pair of Art Deco marquetry encoignures (corner cabinets) by famed French Art Deco designer and maker Leon Jallot, circa 1920s Paris, France. We just completed restoration to both cabinets in a gorgeous French Polish which gives incredible depth and vivid detail to the exotic marquetry wood. Both cabinets are signed on the top of the cabinets, underneath the Nero Portoro marble tops. Each of the bow front corner cabinets feature exotic Amaranth (Violet Wood) veneered doors with dual fluted walnut column front legs and ebonized banded marquetry of stylized birds and leaves. Topped with matching Nero Portoro marble tops, the most expensive marble available, that have exceptional gold and white veining over a deep lustrous black background. The interior is fitted with an exotic Amboyna Burl. The mixture of all of these rare luxurious materials (Nero Portoro, Ebony, Amaranth, Amboyna Burl) provide such an exquisite foundation to these works of art by Leon Jallot. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Considered one of the most sophisticated furniture designers and makers in Paris during the Art Deco period, Leon Jallot's works were included by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann in the furnishing of his Hotel d'un Collectionneur at the Exposition International des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in 1925. As a result of Jallot's combination of rich materials and a carefully edited design sensibility, one of his pieces from the Exposition was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, leading to inclusion of his work in exclusive exhibitions at the leading American luxury department stores, including Macy's and B. Altman in New York City and Wanamaker's in Philadelphia during the late 1920s. Léon Jallot retired in the 1940s , while his son Maurice Jallot continued the family activity until the 1950s. MEASUREMENTS: (overall) H 37" x *W 29" x D 19" *This piece is shaped as a triangle, the measurement of the rear corner to the front corners is 21" Marble is 1.25" thick CONDITION: Excellent restored condition. A French Louis XVI-style gilt bronze mounted wooden pedestal
Located in Milano, IT
Transport yourself to a bygone era of opulence and grandeur with this elegant French pedestal in the style of Louis XVI. While its design harkens back to the 18th century, this exquisite piece of artistry likely hails from the late 19th to early 20th century. Crafted meticulously from wood, it is adorned with magnificent inlays that adorn every surface. As your eyes traverse the intricate patterns, you'll discover a tapestry of motifs including urns, rosettes, cascading florals, and other classical elements. At its heart, proudly displayed, is the emblem of the Sun King, a symbol of absolute monarchy and power, reminiscent of an era steeped in history and regal splendor. The ormolu mounts, with their ornamental feet and elaborate cartouches, add another layer of sophistication, accentuating the pedestal's lavish design. The marble top serves as a platform for displaying decorative pieces like busts, vases, or statues, enhancing the overall aesthetic. But there's more to this masterpiece than meets the eye. A concealed door reveals small drawers inside, providing discreet storage for your precious trinkets and keepsakes. This pedestal, with its ageless beauty and timeless allure, is a testament to the enduring charm of neoclassical and French styles. Imagine it gracing the corner of a room, bathed in soft light, where it becomes a conversation starter, a relic of a bygone era that exudes sophistication and elegance. It's a piece that invites you to touch its intricate details, to appreciate the craftsmanship of a time when every detail was painstakingly considered.
