Rowland Hilder Drawings and Watercolor Paintings
English, 1905-1993
Rowland Hilder was a well-known landscape artist and book illustrator. Born in New York state, his English father moved the family to Kent, England, in 1915. It was here his natural talent for drawing was noticed by his school. Later, Hilder went to study at the Goldsmiths, University of London. He was well-known as an accomplished watercolorist, particularly in his sensitive handling of the sky and earth. Between 1964–74, he was president of the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolors.

Though of staunch English stock, Hilder chanced to be born in Long Island, New York, where as a child he caught his first glimpse of pictures hanging on walls when his father took him to the mansions of the resident millionaires. When war broke out the family sailed back to England; and when it was over a perceptive schoolmaster, recognising a natural talent for drawing, set him on the road to Goldsmiths' College, in London. There he joined the etching class, but soon transferred to drawing under the noted illustrator Edmund J. Sullivan, to which Hilder acknowledged a lifelong debt. Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education.
