Steve Smulka Art
American, b. 1949
Steve Smulka (b. 1949, Detroit, Michigan) attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, studying with Chuck Close, among others. Upon completing his MFA at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he moved back to New York. Soon after, Smulka began to focus his skills on capturing the elusiveness of light through glass. He says: "My intention for the paintings is not to be photorealistic but to leave a trace of the artist's hand and a subtle record of brushstrokes; to create a feeling of space and atmosphere that is more tangible than a photograph. I'm not concerned with just copying a photograph. I always intensify what I see. This careful observation of light and shadow is made more intense by the larger than life-size scale of the painted objects. Finding beauty in the details is one of the main inspirations for my paintings." Smulka is a two-time recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the United States and Europe and is included in important corporate, public, and private collections in North and South America, Europe, Japan, and Australia.
He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.(Biography provided by Gallery Henoch)

Contemporary Oil of Art Deco Home Decor w/ Blue Masculine Statue in Drawing Room
By Linda Blackburn

Blue Statue, 2020
"For Blackburn, the Western’s heroic drama, good-versus-evil narrative, and assertive landscape are challenges to face in her work. These aspects of film can overwhelm a painting, thus distancing the viewer from the art. She wants the art to be dominant; “Painting wins,” she declares. She finds this happens when a painting possesses what she terms “classical balance.” By this the artist means that everything is where it needs to be compositionally—nothing can be changed—and “the whole can be seen at once.”

Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe
22 x 22 inches
oil on linen canvas
Signed on reverse
Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life.
In this work, three vibrant peach colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people.
Read below for an amusing profile written about the artist in 2003:
You‘ve likely seen him on the streets of Hudson, seated before his canvas in a multi-colored paint daubed t-shirt and shorts, his straw hat providing shade for all but his tanned forearms and knees. His splattered Technicolor Walkman tape player...
