Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Glass
Located in New Orleans, LA
This engraved glass was crafted to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Sixteen years following the coronation of her father, King George VI, the official coronation of Queen Elizabeth II represented a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity. Held at Westminster Abbey, it was the first official celebration of its kind ever to be televised — approximately 27 million people in the United Kingdom alone tuned in to watch their new Queen don her crown for the first time. Considering the widespread popularity of the event, commemorative objects such as this became highly desirable, as people around the world sought remembrances of the joyous occasion.
This glass is an exceptional example of its type that remains in excellent condition. One side reads "The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 1953," while the other displays the initials "ER II...

- 1stDibs ExpertDecember 5, 2024Whether Mappin & Webb makes watches has evolved over time. In the late 19th century, Mappin & Webb began producing a line of timepieces. The company even supplied soldiers in the 1898 Battle of Omdurman with its acclaimed Campaign watch. After World War II, the luxury silversmith gradually phased out its watch production. Today, the company is an authorized dealer for numerous luxury watchmakers and sells these companies' timepieces in its stores. Find a variety of Mappin & Webb jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024To identify David Webb jewelry, search the piece carefully for a maker's mark. The luxury jewelry maker stamps its pieces with the word "Webb." By comparing your piece to pictures shared on trusted online resources, you can then determine when your piece was produced, find out its name and learn further information. David Webb also offers an authentication service, though there is a fee to use it. Information about how to request an authentication is available on the brand's official website. On 1stDibs, explore an assortment of David Webb jewelry.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024To identify Thomas Webb glass, flip the item over and look for a maker's marking. Most pieces feature either a sandblasted or acid-etched hallmark. Over the maker's long history, Thomas Webb employed many different markings. Some simply say “Webb,” while others read “Thos Webb” or “Thomas Webb.” You can find images of the markings on trusted online resources and compare them to the marks on your piece to determine if it's a Thomas Webb and approximately when it may have been made. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can also help you identify the items. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of Thomas Webb glass.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024The answer to the question of when did Watches of Switzerland buy Mappin & Webb may be a bit surprising, as it's a misconception that the latter company purchased the former. By the 1990s, the company Asprey owned both Mappin & Webb and Watches of Switzerland. In 1998, Judith Pilkington arranged for the sale of both Mappin & Webb and Watches of Switzerland, starting a new organization. Subsequently, the two brands went through a series of owners, including the Baugur Group, Landsbanki and Apollo Global Management. On 1stDibs, find a large collection of watches.
