Zammy Migdal Mixed Media

Israeli

Sculptor Zammy Migdal’s innovative work with abstraction has made him a leading contemporary artist. Drawing inspiration from dance, he creates flowing curves and subtle lines in his sculptures that harken back to the movement of performance.

Born in Israel, Migdal came to art after a series of other careers. He joined the Israeli army after high school, serving the mandatory three years. In 1980, he moved to the United States to attend Florida International University where he studied hospitality management. After graduating, he worked for a number of years in the hotel industry, including in 1988 opening a successful boutique hotel near South Beach, Florida. Only after he and his partners sold the property in 2003 did he shift his focus to art, an interest he had developed while renovating the hotel.

Migdal took welding courses before learning from Carolina Sardi, a notable Argentine metal sculptor in Miami. He would often bring his sculptures to dinner parties as a gift for the host. One dinner party included the owner of a local gallery who invited him to exhibit work in an upcoming show. His pieces were a major success with collectors and the exhibition proved a turning point for his artistic career.

Migdal continues to create in-demand sculptures with expressive forms and playful uses of color. He has exhibited his work across North America, including solo and group exhibitions in Miami, Santa Fe, Toronto and Washington, DC.
