Beech Slatback Chairs by Børge Mogensen for FDB Møbler, Denmark 1960s
By FDB Møbler, Børge Mogensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
The designs of Borge Mogensen aimed at functionality, minimalist appearance and easy accessibility. This pair of slatback chairs is perhaps one of the best examples of these principles of the Danish master with a rustic yet modern design. The most attention-grabbing visual element of this rare model is the backrest with eight wooden spindles that create an airy look that recalls the traditional slatback chair style. The curved top rails have a sculptural look mimicked by the armrests that are also supported by individual slats. This creates a unified appearance that highlights the diverse shapes and the natural beauty of the beech wood and its versatile grain. Interesting details are to be found everywhere in the design, including the perfectly fitted seat cushions and the uniquely arranged stretchers connecting the legs. As the lower structure with the legs and stretchers combine straight lines with round shapes, the design gains a sculptural look that is appealing from all angles. The structure displays a beautiful contrast between the smooth beech frame and the elegant and textured bouclé fabric of the cushions. The chair’s manufacturer, FDB Møbler is a Danish furniture company established in 1942, and Børge Mogensen served as the design studio’s manager. Mogensen and the designers he employed came from the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker's Guild tradition and were unwilling to prioritize anything over craftsmanship and quality. Extremely modest and confident at the same time is how these chairs can be best described. Mogensen preferred to work with traditional and natural materials, but also liked to experiment with new techniques; the resulting models are Danish Modern classics. Condition: In good vintage condition. The chairs’ cushions have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 23.42 in W x 24.4 in D x 32.48 in H; Seat height 18.11 in; Arm height 25.39 in 59.5 cm W x 62 cm D x 82.5 cm H; Seat height 46 cm; Arm height 64.5 cm About the designer: Borge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinetmaker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942. At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950, he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa...

"Saga" Wall Sconces by Kay Kørbing for Lyfa, Denmark 1960s
By Lyfa, Kay Korbing
Located in Utrecht, NL
These Lyfa-edition “Saga” wall sconces by Danish architect and designer, Kay Kørbing are true collectors’ pieces. By the 1950s, Lyfa had built an international reputation for original, high-quality, modernist lamps. In the postwar era, the company collaborated with esteemed architects and designers to produce minimalist, sculptural pieces including these lamps. Made of brass, metal, and crystal, the design of this model is entirely in the vein of modernism, while also sticking to the main ideals of Danish design, such as functionality. This can be observed in the lamps’ build that allows them to be faced either up- or downwards. The proportions are carefully thought out, with three main sections comprising the design. The three elements - the brass base, black metal shade holder, and the crystal glass shade - are clearly separated both by their shape, material, and colour. Most eye-catching are the Orrefors crystal glass shades in a peculiar shape that appear to be roll cut. Orrefors has been established in Swedish design tradition since 1898. Glass from the forests of Småland was incomparable: “Il n’y as que ça!” (There is nothing like it!) exclaimed the 1925 Paris World Fair. As these sconces showcase, the glass and shape are always in focus, combined with elegance, simplicity, and confidence. The predominantly round shapes are balanced by the square backplate. The artistic design is very honest in a purely Scandinavian manner, exposing the joinery and the materials’ natural qualities as well. This pair of “Saga” wall sconces is a stunning example of how the 1960s are still able to deliver modern "art" to any interior. The producer, Lyfa, produced some cabin lamps...

"Safari" Chairs in Patinated Cognac Leather, Europe ca 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Born from both adventure and practicality, the safari chair has transcended its 18th-century origins being lugged around the great outdoors to become a beloved icon of design. Here, the classic pairing of the elegant patinated leather is paired with beautiful solid wood to command attention which is partly why this chair style remains popular in contemporary interior design. The design of this pair of remarkable chairs sits in a long tradition of safari chairs. From Eileen Gray to Kaare Klint and Elias Svedberg a lot of great designers have made versions of self-assembled furniture, which probably finds it origin in Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military. The design recalls Pierre Chapo’s “S10” chair...

Set of 4 Sculptural Patinated Oak Spinning Chairs, Europe ca early 20th century
Located in Utrecht, NL
The ‘spinning chair’, this historic type of seating has had numerous modern interpretations across Europe, however, most preserved the main functional characteristics: solid wood, enduring, high quality craftsmanship, a tall, straight back for good posture and freedom of movement. The art of spinning yarn is thousands of years old, but the spinning wheel as we know it is estimated to have arrived in Europe around the middle of the 13th century and along with it came the three or four-legged spinning chair. The backs were often hand carved with various motifs or fantasy creatures making each one unique and individual. As these oak chairs show, the Modernist movement influenced the traditional design by removing most of the intricate decorative elements, and substituting them with a more streamlined structure. The carved high backs and octagonal seats...

Pair of Ilmari Lappalainen "Rex" Armchairs for Asko, Finland 1940s
By Ilmari Lappalainen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Like the “Laila” model, these chairs were designed by Finnish designer, Ilmari Lappalainen for Asko in 1948, and become a beloved model. So much so, that during the 1990s, it was put back into production by Asko. With Ilmari Tapiovaara, who was the artistic director of Asko from 1938 to 1941, the modernization of the company’s range began, and the wooden designs were joined by modern, upholstered furniture pieces, including “Rex”. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges, the generous back with tufted buttons, and the tapered, wooden legs. The body has the classic Nordic look, which explains its contemporary popularity both among the public and institutions. The cosy open design is dominated by the gently enveloping back and arms that appear to welcome the sitter. Thanks to the large seat cushion, the armchairs’ comfort lives up to Lappalainen’s famous standards. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the small lacquered legs as well. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930 the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s “Laila...

Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in a Patterned Bouclé Fabric, Denmark 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker lounge chair recalls the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this lounge chair is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful models created in Denmark during the mid-century era. The large, curved design is reminiscent of the Chesterfield style, with rolled arms and a curving back, short feet, and button tufting. While the impression may recall the historic style, it is its more streamlined, modern interpretation with fewer decorative elements and a much lighter colour palette. The stitches on the back create a scalloped look that sections the back, enhancing the voluptuous size. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The short, mismatched stained beech legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. The front legs differ in their angle and shape from the back ones, adding visual interest, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 37.2 in W x 40.55 in D x 35.03 in H; Seat height 16.33 in; Arm height 23.62 in 94.5 cm W x 103 cm D x 89 cm H; Seat height 41.5 cm; Arm height 60 cm About the Designer: This Danish-made sofa...
