The top of tree features hornbills that are the symbol of heaven. The middle represents the present earth and bottom of the tree the underworld. On either side of the carving are powerful faces of “Udos”, Udos, are mythical bore like creatures. The Dayak believed that Udos and other tribal motifs could scare off opponents during battle. Fighting and war were essential parts of Dayak lives protecting their land and warding off curses. To achieve such detail & depth required immense patience, craftsmanship and many months by a skilled artisan to complete.
