Howard Kanovitz, born in Fall River, Massachusetts, began painting in 1949, after an early career as a jazz trombonist. He studied at The Rhode Island School of Design and at The Art Students League in Woodstock with Yasu Kunyyoshi, before moving to New York City and apprenticing with Franz Kline.
His Abstract Expressionist work was exhibited at Tenth Street galleries - Tanager, Hansa, Poindexter, and in Stable Gallery Annuals. Kanovitz also had a two person show with Marisol at The Great Jones Gallery and participated in the 1956 “Poets Select Painter’s” show at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery.

Amaranth Ehrenhalt was long interested in patter and the idea of decoration in her work. Indeed, in the mid-60s, before Miriam Schapiro or Judy Chicago or the idea of "femmage," she embarked on a series of works that explored these ideas. This is one of them. She wanted to incorporate typically female images and ideas into her art. To quote one reviewer of Miriam Schapiro's work: "These things had been tossed aside, and she gave them appreciation."
Amaranth Ehrenhalt was a multifaceted artist best known for her paintings. She was
part of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, working first in New York in
the early 1950s, and then in Paris for much of the rest of her career. Never afraid to
experiment, Ehrenhalt's work may best be described as bold, even aggressive, in
execution, composition and even color. She worked across media, including oils, works
on paper, prints and etchings, tapestry, design and sculpture.
Amaranth Ehrenhalt died on March 16, 2021 in Manhattan. She was 93. The cause was
Covid-19.
Ehrenhalt moved to Paris early in her career and settled there as an expatriate artist for

The history of the New York School painters is still being written, but Price earned a well-deserved place from the beginning. Price was one of the youngest of the first generation Abstract Expressionist circle of painters working in New York after WWII. Though only in his late twenties he began exhibiting in 1948 in New York at Hugo, Bodely, Iolas and Egan galleries. In a 1949, showing at Peridot galleries, Price was hailed for his breakthrough "Maze Series." A complex interweaving of organic shapes, automatic in nature and sometimes resembling bones or body parts, the "Maze" paintings exuded a pulsating energy that brought him critical acclaim. He received rave reviews in Art Digest, the New York Times and the New York Tribune.
Price's earliest work was biomorphic or surrealist in nature, influenced by the automatism of Andre Breton and his school. By 1946, his work began to move away from this style to an all-over, decentralized style which became the "Maze" works and ultimately AbEx works which saw their culmination in the "Black Warrior" series.

Caradoc Ehrenhalt would often accompany his mother, the artist Amaranth Ehrenhalt,
on her visits to the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York. She enjoyed taking a close-up look at the works, many of which were by artists
she had known personally.
Mr. Ehrenhalt loved those trips. The museum guards not so much.
"She would get very close to the art and point out details and techniques, her finger
getting close," her son said. The guards would rush over and issue the don't touch
warning."

The history of the New York School painters is still being written, but Price earned a well-deserved place from the beginning. Price was one of the youngest of the first generation Abstract Expressionist circle of painters working in New York after WWII. Though only in his late twenties he began exhibiting in 1948 in New York at Hugo, Bodely, Iolas and Egan galleries. In a 1949, showing at Peridot galleries, Price was hailed for his breakthrough "Maze Series." A complex interweaving of organic shapes, automatic in nature and sometimes resembling bones or body parts, the "Maze" paintings exuded a pulsating energy that brought him critical acclaim. He received rave reviews in Art Digest, the New York Times and the New York Tribune.
Price's earliest work was biomorphic or surrealist in nature, influenced by the automatism of Andre Breton and his school. By 1946, his work began to move away from this style to an all-over, decentralized style which became the "Maze" works and ultimately AbEx works which saw their culmination in the "Black Warrior" series.

Described as the "author of a dappled infinite," Natkin created some of the most innovative color abstractions of the late 20th century. Populated by stripes, dots, grids, and an array of free-floating forms, his light- filled canvases are sensuous, playful, and visually complex.
While attending the school of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1948 to 1952, Natkin was afforded the opportunity to study the museum's world-class collection of French post-impressionist art and decided to turn his attention to painting instead. During these formative years, Natkin was inspired by the examples of Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse, who used decorative patterning and arbitrary color to evoke mood. Most importantly, he also discovered the work of Paul Klee, the Swiss-German artist whose whimsical, semi-abstract paintings reflected his belief that "art does not reproduce the visible but makes visible"--a credo that nurtured Natkin's burgeoning interest in emotional content.
In 1952, he lived briefly in New York, where he saw and was influenced by the bold canvases of Willem de Kooning. In 1959, aware of the limited patronage for abstract art in Chicago, Natkin and Dolnick moved to New York, where Natkin joined the stable of artists associated with the Poindexter Gallery, known for its support of emerging painters and sculptors. Immersed in the dynamism of the New York art world, where Abstract Expressionism and Color-Field painting were the dominant styles of the day, Natkin's aesthetic approach continued to evolve. In 1961, he adopted a serial approach to painting, a practice he would adhere to throughout his career.
Natkin began to develop a more intricate style (indebted to Klee), depicting diamonds, polygons, ovals, squiggles and other shapes against textured, delicately toned backgrounds interspersed with seemingly randomly placed dots and daubs of pigment and areas of crosshatching. This new style is evident in the "Intimate Lighting" series works.
