The study of art and the history of art are closely intertwined in the work of Gregory Frank Harris which reflects his exploration of technique and art history. Born in southern California, Harris and his twin brother grew up in a family that embraced the visual arts as well as theatre and music. During his stint at California State University in Long Beach, he studied both art and theatre, but also began writing music, which then became his primary focus. Over the next decade, Harris and his brother played piano and drums respectively in a variety of bands, earning their living in the nightclubs and hotels up and down the west coast. The first sign of a new direction appeared while the band was on the road in Spokane, Washington where Harris rekindled his interest in painting.
Like generations of artists before him, Harris turned to the old masters and the impressionist painters as sources for his study of painting. Harris was fortunate to have two of his copies, Rembrandt’s Woman with Pink and Gainsborough’s Blue Boy, selected as props for the 1982 film version of the musical Annie, directed by John Huston. Harris also began exhibiting at juried shows in 1982 and marketing his work nationally. Robert Childers first served in the U.S. Navy for six years after graduating from Medford High School in 1941. Following World War II, he studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art where he was the recipient of a gold medal and, upon graduating from the Museum's school, was the recipient of a Cresson scholarship and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he received his Masters degree. Childers continued his education with classes at Fleisher Memorial and performed for two years with the Philadelphia Dance Theater.
Following his studies, he worked in fabrics, film production, toys and illustrations for publishers with du Pont in New York City. Born in Berkeley, California, Zena Kavin studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and, privately, with Kravchenko in Moscow. She lived in Berkeley and in Oakland her entire life, except for four years spent in New Mexico in the late 1930s. In 1949, she married artist Jon Cornin and settled with him in Oakland. Under the peudonym Corka, the Cornins produced cartoons for the Saturday Evening Post and the New Yorker. Kavin worked in various media, including wood engraving, lithography and sculpture. She was a member of the San Francisco Artists Association and exhibited with them as well as at the San Francisco Museum of Art Inaugural (1935), the California–Pacific International Exposition, San Diego (1935), the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939). Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Davis Art Center, the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of California.

Born in Paris, Joffrin first attended the École Supérieure Sophie-Germain before, in 1928, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, initially in the studio of Lucien Simon. She continued her studies there for several years in the studios of Jacques Despierre and Lucien Fontanarosa. After receiving her diploma, Joffrin was appointed Professor of Drawing and taught in Paris until 1945, when she began to devote herself exclusively to her career as a fine artist. This Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative painter, mixed media artist, and sculptor was born in New York City in 1914 and grew up in Los Angeles. During the Great Depression, he rode the rails back to New York with just $5 in his pocket to attend the National Academy of Art, where he met his first wife. Snipper applied to the academy twice to ensure he would be accepted: once under his given name and once under his mother's maiden name. When he was accepted as Martin Snipper, he adopted the name permanently. In addition to his career as a fine artist, Snipper became a foundational figure in the development of the San Francisco Bay Area art movement of the 1960's and 1970's.
Snipper remains a legendary figure in San Francisco, both for boldly expanding the Arts Commission during his tenure as Executive Director (1967-1980), and for helping shepherd the Neighborhood Arts Program into existence over 40 years ago. His innovative grass-roots approach inspired similar programs in cities across the United States while San Francisco's own program continues to bring writers into public schools, oversee the city's publicly owned cultural centers, and fund art programs and events.

Born in Delano, California, Amanda Danitschek first studied art and design at San Jose City College and, subsequently, at West Valley College, Saratoga. Danitschek explores her fascination with postures, expressions, and colors in her collages and paintings through unconventionally observed figures that often appear untethered from the physical world.
Speaking of her work, the artist has said: "My figurative paintings are a menagerie of quirky creatures that evoke a curious sense of dislocation. They are redolent of actors in a play, characters from a novel and depression-era survivors. I am fascinated by postures, expressions, colors and textures. I eliminate detail so that the persona is left with only their essence. The alternative reality is shared with birds, boats and ethereal costumes. The stage is set and the figures are finding their path; their role in life."

Mine Grassetti first attended Vermont's Bennington College, the first college to include visual and performing arts as an equal partner in the liberal arts curriculum. In 1948, she graduated with a degree in art and architecture and subsequently studied at the Richmond Art Center.
