Morihiro Sato graduated from Musashino College of Fine Art before studying under the printmaker Joichi Hoshi (1913-1979). Sato’s work focuses on the beauty of nature, particularly that of trees. Through the medium of woodblock with inclusion of metallic pigments, his delicately atmospheric prints evoke a sense of gentle sense of wonder.

An early twentieth-century sugar-lift aquatint showing Zeus in the guise of a swan, reclining and cradling Lida in his wings while King Tyndareus ponders the mutability of human circumstance.
Born in Utica, New York, Arthur Davies attended the Chicago Academy of Design from 1879 to 1882. He furthered his studies at the Chicago Art Institute, before moving to New York City in 1885 where he studied at the Art Students League and Gotham Art Students League. In 1893, he made the first of many trips to Europe, visiting Holland, Paris, and London. He became an arch-exponent of Modernism and the central organizing figure of 1913's watershed Armory Show. Davies developed a style that combined visionary Symbolism with elements of Tonalism and Cubism.
Who Was Who in American Art describes him as an “…important but enigmatic Modernist whose work was poetic, mysterious, and visionary”. Davies was the recipient of many gold medals and prizes and juried awards and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums nationwide, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.

Max Pollak achieved a reputation for the skill of his etchings as a young man living in Vienna, Austria. A large, early-20th-century, hand-colored Japanese woodblock showing elegantly-robed figures seated beside musical instruments in a panoramic landscape and viewing the full moon through golden clouds. An elegant example composed with clear artistic vision and printed with a consummate mastery of a challenging medium.
Nihonga style painter Ogyu Tensen was born in present-day Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. He studied at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, where he was taught by the well-known Kanō school painter Gahō Hashimoto (1835-1908), who was instrumental in the development of nihonga painting. Tensen was selected to participate in the first Bunten exhibition (Ministry of Education Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1907, in which he won an award. He went on to win many other awards at the Bunten exhibitions and the exhibitions of its successor organizations, the Teiten (Imperial Academy of Fine Arts) and Shin Bunten along with exhibitions of the Japan Arts Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) and the post-war 1946 Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). Born in Chicago, Ross Wetzel was an avid art student through high school, and then enrolled- with his future wife and fellow artist, Janice- at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He was soon working for Walt Disney Productions, taking lead production roles in the creation of such Disney classics as Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi. During the Second World War, he served with the Motion Picture Unit of the First Army Air Corp under Ronald Reagan, creating training films for fighter pilots and bombers and working beside actors including Alan Ladd and Clark Gable.
After the War, Ross and Janice started a serigraphy business, which came to be known as Ross Wetzel Studios creating animated commercials and print advertisements for companies such as Kellogg's, Kleenex and Continental Airlines that featured such characters as Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam. Engraver and printmaker, Hiroyuki Tajima was born in Tokyo in 1911 and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1934, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Arts with a specialization in western-style painting. Tajima later studied fabric dyeing under Hirokawa Matsugoro (1889-1952) and woodblock printing with the Sosaku-Hanga artist, Nagase Yoshiro (1891-1978), a founder of the Japan Print Association (Hanga Kyokai). In 1946, inspired by Dada and Surrealism, Tajima joined Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to exploring and reviving the abstract and surrealist painting ideals that had been suppressed during WWII.
Tajima exhibited widely and with success, including with Tokyo's Modern Art Association (Prix du Nouveau Venu, 1962), the Japanese Engraving Association, the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in Tokyo (1962), the Northwest International Print Exhibition (1962-1964) and the Tokyo International Print Biennale (1964). His work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (British Columbia), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) and the British Museum in London.

Painter, printmaker, illustrator, graphic designer and art director, Roy Carruthers was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and first studied at the Port Elizabeth Technical College Art School. From 1956, he worked as an art director and graphic designer in South Africa and, after 1960, in London. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States and worked in the advertising industry in New York. In 1974, Carruthers started his own graphic design firm while pursuing his career as a fine artist producing original paintings, drawings and etchings. His collaboration with Editions Press in San Francisco produced both sculpture and color lithographs, of which this work is a pristine example. He also maintained an academic career, teaching graphic techniques at Manhattan's School for the Visual Arts.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Roy Carruthers exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators (1973). His work continued to be exhibited in South Africa and the United States and throughout Europe. In 1982, he returned to South Africa as a guest of the South African Government and was honored with a touring museum exhibition of his work. Engraver and printmaker, Hiroyuki Tajima was born in Tokyo in 1911 and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1934, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Arts with a specialization in western-style painting. Tajima later studied fabric dyeing under Hirokawa Matsugoro (1889-1952) and woodblock printing with the Sosaku-Hanga artist, Nagase Yoshiro (1891-1978), a founder of the Japan Print Association (Hanga Kyokai). In 1946, inspired by Dada and Surrealism, Tajima joined Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to exploring and reviving the abstract and surrealist painting ideals that had been suppressed during WWII.
Tajima exhibited widely and with success, including with Tokyo's Modern Art Association ( Prix du Nouveau Venu, 1962), the Japanese Engraving Association, the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in Tokyo (1962), the Northwest International Print Exhibition (1962-1964) and the Tokyo International Print Biennale (1964). His work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (British Columbia), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) and the British Museum in London.

Hungarian-born Maine resident, Miklos Pogany, is a prolific artist with an impressive exhibition history and work in the permanent collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A master of multiple media, Pogany creates vivid works based on nature and the built environment, exploring and pushing the parameters of each medium. The artist describes his motivation as follows: "I react to wonder, desires, conflicts, meanings, memories, revenge, sexuality, love and death. I gather all these fragments and make some personal sense of it all."
