Organic Shape Chair by Moveis Cimo, Brazil 1950s
By Moveis Cimo
Located in Whitstable, GB
Small curved chair with organic shaped ivory wood base, 'Pau Marfim'. Brazil, 1950s.
The wooden frame is really eye catching; the organic shape frame is divided into three parts, with beautiful rounded edges and curves. There are some minor marks of wear and age, normal in a vintage piece, but frame is in excellent condition.
The slightly angled back and seating appear to float on the frame.
This chair design is very unique, and at the same time, very ergonomic: The seat and backrest provide a very comfortable seating experience.
New upholstery in a light green zigzag fabric.

Pair of MP-51 Armchairs by Percival Lafer, Brazilian Mid-Century
By Percival Lafer
Located in Whitstable, GB
A rare model of armchair by Percival Lafer, our stunning pair of MP-51 have their structure entirely made out of solid Jatobá wood - Brazilian cherry.
The seat base has been redone with new natural leather straps. These straps are part of the overall aesthetics of the piece.
The wood on both chairs has been sanded and matt varnished, revealing the beautiful colour and grain of Jatobá. The wood surfaces look stunning.
The chairs have a new brown natural leather upholstery, done in Brazil.
These MP51 are very comfortable, and ours are in excellent condition.
We have two chairs available.
A common trait amongst Lafer pieces is that they are very comfortable and also unique: they have a hard-achieved simplicity about them.
Lafer studied architecture at São Paulo’s Universidade Mackenzie. After he graduated, his father passed away suddenly, leaving a furniture business that Lafer took over with his brothers.
Lafer then made the jump from architecture to furniture design in 1961, putting a focus on thoughtfully designed pieces available at affordable prices. In the same year he introduced the amazing MP-1 chair, a plush piece of furniture made with iron and wood- and since then has had a prolific career.
The silhouettes of his lounge chairs, armchairs and other seating were were a step away from the streamlined American and European mid-century modernism being designed at the time, taking on casual, puffed forms thanks to the use of polyurethane layers as padding. He combined such contemporary industrial materials with local natural ones, namely Brazilian hardwoods, which delighted customers around the world as Lafer became one of the country’s leading exporters of furniture.
Lafer has continued to design furniture throughout his career, branching into sofas, tables and lighting. He was at the forefront of mechanical furniture movements, debuting the MP-7 sofa...

Two Seater Sofa, wooden frame and upholsterd cushions, by Joaquim Tenreiro
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in Whitstable, GB
Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in the 1960s, this sculptural piece is a great example of Tenreiro’s genius.
The design of this sofa is testimony to Tenreiro's passion for his craft: the features of this piece show his deep knowledge of wood as the sections are worked to perfection and the limits of the material.
The furniture feels light visually, however it is very sturdy. Tenreiro uses wood cleverly never losing sight of the furniture primary function as an utilitarian element.
Our sofa is in excellent vintage condition. It has been refinished, the furniture is solid and the wood grain, surfaces and colour look beautiful.
We made new upholstered cushions for the seat and back rest.
Joaquim Tenreiro was born in Portugal in 1906 into a family of woodworkers and carpenters. In the late 1920s, he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro and began working for the firm of Laubisch Hirth...

Set of 8 "Tião" Chairs, by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil, 1959
By Sergio Rodrigues

Sergio Rodrigues
Tião dining chair, Brazil 1959
Tião is a comfortable, classic and elegant chair designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1959, and manufactured by Oca.
We have a set of eight Tião chairs in dark solid hardwood frame, re-upholstered in a light grey fabric.
In good vintage condition. Beautiful deep wood colour.
Minor wear commensurate with age and use, for a vintage piece.
Provenance of this set of chairs is a family home in São Paulo, where they formed a set with the iconic Burton Table, also by Sergio Rodrigues.
Passionate about drawing and wood art since he was a boy, the world-renowned Sérgio Rodrigues (1927-2014) made history as a precursor of Brazilian design. He revolutionised aesthetics in the country in the 1960s with his original style of curved and generous shapes, representative of Brazilian culture. With this approach he created the Mole armchair in 1957, still an innovative design today and one of the most important works of the 20th century, responsible for projecting Brazil on the world design stage.
The designer from Rio designed several other pieces that became design icons, such as the Mocho bench, the Oscar armchairs, Kilin and Diz armchairs...

Pair of Armchairs by Rino Levi, Brazil, 1950s
By Rino Levi
Located in Whitstable, GB
A pair of armchairs made of Caviúna.
Designed by Rino Levi, Brazil, 1950s
The grain & colour of the wood, plus the impeccable woodwork alone, make these quite impressive armchairs
The sculpted and curvaceous lines of the armrests are beautifully done. Together with the vertical thin rods which are part of the armrest, they form a visually distinct, architectural appearance.
The wood structure is very firm and the surface of the wood in these chairs is in excellent condition for a vintage piece.
The brand new upholstery in an orange fabric, was done in São Paulo and has been very well executed.
Son of Italian parents and born in São Paulo, Levi was a brilliant architect and is mostly known for his legacy in architecture design but his furniture pieces - mostly conceived for his projects - follow in quality his architectural work.
Rino Levi was born in São Paulo in 1901, from Italian parents. He studied in Milan and Rome under Marcello Piacentini, where he graduated in 1926.
Following his return to São Paulo, Levi established the firm Rino Levi Arquitetos Associados. His trajectory includes innovative projects and the discussion of architecture as a practice. Rino’s main legacy is in architectural design, with his creative solutions that integrate art and technique, but also for the way of thinking about architecture in Brazil.
Levi's office produced a large quantity of projects, in various areas from residential to commercial...

Set of Novo Rumo wood & Marble Coffee table & Side Tables. Brazil, 1960s
By Novo Rumo
Located in Whitstable, GB
Amazing set of Veneered wood tables by Novo Rumo
Brazil 1960s.
A long coffee table and 2 side tables, in tropical wood finish.
Beautiful white marble tops. Lovely wood grain and original brass bolts.
The pictures do not make justice to this set of tables- Harmonious set of shapes, lines and proportions. A well balanced contrast between the lovely grain wood and the matt, smooth white marble.
The radius of the round corners are so well proportioned in relation to the dimensions of footprint and height.
The marble tops are subtly sunk into the side edges…a nice detail that keeps items from falling off the edges. These tables are really stunning.
The immaculate white original marble is in perfect condition- no spots or stains.
They were acquired from a family in São Paulo, together with an also stunning JD Decorações sofa set.

Brazilian Dining Chairs by Novo Rumo, Set of 8
By Novo Rumo
Located in Whitstable, GB
Eight beautiful dining chairs by Novo Rumo in solid wooden frame. Brazil 1960s
These chairs have seat and back shell made in a single curved plywood piece, which is finished in high grade wood veneer.
It also has original wooden Buttons on the seat.
The set of eight chairs have been refinished, and reupholstered in Brazil with a luxurious velvet fabric.
The hardwood frame has a beautiful live grain and colour. The great craftsmanship is a common in Novo Rumo pieces, and these are in very good vintage condition. Original unique brass screws, common amongst Novo Rumo and Zalszupin pieces.
Produced in the 1960s, these pieces are often described as 'by Jorge Zalszupin for Novo Rumo’.
Moveis Novo Rumo was a furniture studio and manufacture in São Paulo founded by Francesco Scapinelli: architect and ceramist, brother of celebrated designer Giuseppe Scapinelli.
Novo Rumo produced excellent quality furniture at Industrial scale, using quality hard word from Brazil.
Their pieces are always inventive, a unique design and of high quality craftsmanship.
The design of these chairs- and many other produced by Novo Rumo, resemble Zalszupin's design probably due to his close collaboration and often contribution to Moveis Novo Rumo production.
Novo Rumo's work is often also mistaken as L’Atelier (Zalszupin’s manufacture company) because several employees of L’Atelier left the company to join Novo Rumo.
