Image: 16"H x 30"W Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings. He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago. Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory. Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy. He spent time capturing on canvas Arizona's Canyon De Chelly and Navajo horsemen traversing the region's arid tablelands. He painted California...

He moved to San Jose, California with his family in 1874 and at an early age was apprenticed to local portrait painter Louis Lussier. He later spent one year working in a local photography studio re-touching negatives. His youth was spent visiting the art galleries of San Francisco and, with no formal training, he began sketching and painting in 1883 in the beautiful Santa Clara Valley. He painted many landscapes of that area and made trips to the remotest parts of the Sierra and the Monterey Peninsula where he painted many coastal scenes. He began exhibiting in San Jose in the 1880s. By the turn of the century, his works were handled exclusively by Gump's and he was recognized as one of California's foremost painters. In 1905 he established a studio in Denver and for seven years concentrated on the rugged landscape of the Rocky Mountains. While there, the Santa Fe, Western Pacific, and Colorado, Midland railroads commissioned him to paint scenes along their routes. After his time in Colorado, he returned to San Jose where he remained for the rest of his life. Harmon died there on October 14, 1936 and is buried in Oak Hill...

China Camp Fishing Village - San Rafael California - Abstract Impressionist
Located in Soquel, CA
China Camp Fishing Village - San Rafael California - Abstract Impressionist Wonderfully vivid nocturnal of coastal town by Roger Holt (American 1905-1979). Signed faintly lower right (see enhanced image of signature). Condition: good; professionally cleaned; edge wear consistent with age professionally restored; craquelure throughout, New UV-resistant, non yellowing varnish applied. Unframed. Image size: 14.25"H x 17.25"W. Signed indistinctly lower right. China Camp State Park is a 1,514-acre park in San Rafael, California. The park is known for its scenic views, hiking and mountain biking trails, and open spaces. It also features a historic Chinese American shrimp-fishing village and a salt marsh. By the mid-1880s, Chinese Americans had established a settlement of about 500 people in a village they called China Camp. Many of these villagers were originally from Canton, China, and supported themselves and their families here by shrimp fishing in San Francisco Bay. The village had three general stores, a barbershop, and a marine supply shop at its peak. China Camp was one of about twenty-six other shrimp-fishing villages along the coast that supported Chinese American immigrants fleeing San Francisco due to racial prejudice and persecution. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the population of China Camp ballooned as nearly 10,000 residents of San Francisco’s Chinatown fled the destruction and mayhem. Roger Holt was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After attending Rollins College and St. Paul's School of Art in Minnesota, he traveled extensively through the United States and Europe, forming his educational background. Hold was the recipient of five major awards, Mr. Holt exhibited in thirteen museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, Carnegie Institute and the United Nations Building. Settling in Jerome, Arizona in 1954, Roger assisted his wife, Shan Holt, in the operation of the Verde Valley Artist's Gallery and concentrated on his work, experimenting with different painting surfaces such as masonite, canvas board and stiff cardboard. His early work identified with the Expressionist school, while his later work tends toward increasing abstraction. Roger Holt's paintings are included in the collections of Abraham Ribicoff, Vincent Price, John McCloy, Artie Shaw, Burl Ives and numerous universities across the country including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art at the University of New Orleans. Arizona painter...

Wedding Procession is a colored raised line woodcut, done in 1924 by Bertha Boynton Lum (American, 1869 – 1954) . The image measures 13-7/8 x 10-1/8". Raised line impression and painted by the artist, while living in China. Image 13.25"H x 8.75"W Sheet 14.75"H x 10.75" (approx) Signed Lower center in pencil "Bertha Lum" New acid free mat included. Bertha Lum was fascinated by the legends and mythology of the Orient and wrote extensively about them. These legends provided the subject matter for many of her works in woodcut. Bertha Boynton Lum was an American artist known for helping popularize the Japanese and Chinese woodblock print outside of Asia. In May 1869, Lum was born as Bertha Boynton Bull in Tipton, Iowa. Lum's father was Joseph W. Bull (1841–1923), a lawyer and her mother was Harriet Ann Boynton (1842–1925), a school teacher. Both of Lum's parents were amateur artists. Lum had a sister and two brothers, Clara, Carlton, and Emerson. Education and career: In 1890 she lived in Duluth and listed her occupation as artist. She enrolled in the design department of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1895. A few years later she studied stained glass with Anne Weston and attended the Frank Holme School of Illustration. From November 1901 to March 1902, she studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and was influenced by the Japanese techniques of Arthur Wesley Dow in his book Composition, which was published in 1899. Lum married Burt F. Lum, a corporate lawyer from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1903. They spent their seven-week honeymoon in Japan, where she searched for a print maker who could teach her the traditional ukiyo-e method. Toward the end of her stay in Japan, she found a shop that reproduced old prints. The shop sold her some woodcutting tools...
