“My series of paintings deal with sensation and ultra-color,” Kate explains. “I am considering the concepts of over-consciousness, Horror Vacui and the overlap between joy and terror. In visual art, “horror vacui” (from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia (from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.
For this series titled “Gold,” each piece is influenced by a topic of consideration: technology, super-nature, genetics, pharmaceuticals, perception. As Kate studies and meditates on these subjects, her path of investigation grows more and more intense until she teeters between becoming overwhelmed by fear for our future and a euphoria filled with hope and intention. “I feel so much life that I am paralyzed by it, and I am confounded by how sensation and numbness can blend together,” says Kate. “All that glitters is Gold.”

Atlanta-based artist, Tim Hunter’s work stems from his love of nature and concern for the environment. In 2003 he began working primarily with images of birds as an expression of his spiritual connection with nature. After reading an article about the declining bird populations in Georgia, he turned his focus to environmental issues. An avid bird watcher, Tim also experienced the heavily wooded area he grew up in, slowly reduced to shopping malls and subdivisions. He uses asphalt and cement to create his works which refer to the loss of habitat due to human expansion, which is one of the main causes of declining bird populations. His silhouettes are taken from Audubon’s series “Birds of America” which references a period in the past when the bird populations in America were more abundant. Sachi Rome is a painter and a mixed media artist who views her process as a ritual. Utilizing expressive mark making, movement and texture through an experimental use of tools and materials, she creates a visual dialogue that explores spaces for Black people to exist without fear. Connections between identity, memory and African spirituality are entry points for creating a protected and safe space, free from the contrived world that fights to sustain the deception that Black bodies are a threat, and thus unworthy of peaceful existence. Her subjects are colorful, textured figures living in a visual space left open and void of outside negative forces. In creating visual avatars of these souls, she is regifting them with life, presence and audience. They are at home in their space and assured of a rarefied and precious safety, scarcely afforded to and felt by Black people. “My series of paintings deal with sensation and ultra-color,” Kate explains. “I am considering the concepts of over-consciousness, Horror Vacui and the overlap between joy and terror. In visual art, “horror vacui” (from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia (from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.
For this series titled “Gold,” each piece is influenced by a topic of consideration: technology, super-nature, genetics, pharmaceuticals, perception.
