Koekkoek, in the realm of 19th-century art, emerges as a captivating painter born in Amsterdam on November 23, 1849. A scion of the esteemed Koekkoek family, he gained renown for his landscapes and woodland scenes, following in the artistic footsteps of his father, marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s life unfolds with a certain mystery, his artistic journey shaped by training from his father and, likely, his uncle Marinus Adrianus. In 1878, he tied the knot with Carolina Allardina Cornelia Pierson and ventured into the artistic scenes of Hilversum and Brussels, simultaneously opening an art dealership in Amsterdam. Around 1882, the call of London beckoned, echoing the path paved by his brother Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger. In England, he painted landscapes near Guildford, akin to his cousin Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek. The latter part of his life remains shrouded in obscurity. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s artistic style, steeped in the romantic tradition of the Koekkoek family, adorned canvases with landscapes, woodlands, and marine scenes. He was a Belgian impressionist painter of landscapes, marines, harbour scenes, architectures, interiors, city and canal views, portraits and figures. He was also a watercolourist. Gilsoul studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts with the famed master teachers and artists François Courtens (1854 – 1895) and Louis Artan (1837 – 1890). In 1882 he won his first prize at the Academy and in 1884 debuted at the Brussels Salon. He studied also at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he won a prize (1885-1890). Gilsoul was member of the group ‘Voorwaerts’ in 1891. He was awarded a silver medal at the Paris World Fair in 1900. In the same year, King Leopold II commissioned several compositions for his yacht “Alberta” and knighted him to the Order of King of the Belgians. The painter stayed from 1911 in Paris, where he often painted the Versailles region, also worked and lived for some time in Brittany. He had several exhibitions in France. He lived in Bruges, and he was a Belgian painter and one of important Bruges School artists. His brother Frans Van der Smissen (1894-1964) was a sculptor. Leo was a painter of town views, sturdy of trees, landscapes, church interiors, still lifes, marines, interiors, portraits, and some nudes. He acts as a colourist, who practices sobriety. His preference, woodland scenes, a genre in which he has climbed to a solid refinement, particularly specific are the depiction of the tree trunks. His works, brushed concisely and boldly, betray a strong hand that bends the colour ranges to his will and he can adapt to all kinds of subjects. Leo studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts (1913 – 1919) with master teacher and artist Flori Van Acker and won several first prizes there. He studied also at Ghent Academy of Fine Arts (1920 – 1921) with master teachers Godron and Karel Tremerie and later at Dendermonde Academy of Fine Arts (1923 – 1924). Initially strongly influenced by the style of Courtens and the Dendermonde School, under the guidance of painter Ferdinand Willaert he evolved towards to Luminism. His father was a goldsmith. In 1931 he got married and went to live in the Biezenstraat. He died on February 12, 1989. He was a painter, restorer of paintings and copyist of Flemish Primitives. In 1912 he entered the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts with director Flori Van Acker as his teacher and famed artist. In 1926 the Municipal Council of Bruges appointed him as a teacher at the Bruges Academy. He would remain in this position until 1966, the year he retired. Poupaert turned out to be a solid painter with high qualities. He painted numerous Bruges townscapes and also made portraits of important Bruges figures. In the period 1952-1956, he painted two portraits of guardians and superiors of the convent of Our Lady of the Pottery. In 1955 he collaborated with Jules Fonteyne on the murals of the Church of Christ the King. It is located in the forested Ardennes region. Situated within the Bastogne district Luxembourg province. Biography: Asselbergs Alphonse was born on June 19, 1839 in Brussels, Belgium. He was a painter of landscapes and forests. He studied with the master teacher and artist Edouard Huberti from 1863. After having led a world traveled life as a trader, he returned to the countryside of Belgium in 1867 and stayed in the Tervuren region and spent his time painting landscapes with great artists such as H. Boulenger, E. Huberti, J. Coosemans and Th. Baron. In 1868, he co-founded the “Societé Libre des Beaux-Arts”. From 1873 to 1874, he traveled and painted in North Africa with the watercolourist, Arthur Bouvier. It resulted in a number of canvases in the oriental style, but unfortunately without any commercial success. Despite having been shown at numerous exhibitions, they were all still in his studio at the time of his death. After returning from his travels, he lived near the artists’ colony in Genk and made occasional excursions to the forests of Fontainebleu in France. From 1875 to 1877 he worked in the Barbizon region with students of Rousseau. In 1877, Asselbergs moved to Brussels. He painted quite actively in the Brussels countryside, in the Ardennes and Campine regions. He had a studio with a round tower, on a street that is now named after him. He also made short trips abroad to France and Italy. During the 1880’s, he held exhibitions at the Salon de Paris. Charles was a painter of landscapes, city views, seascapes, still lifes, flowers, children, genre scenes, figures (often Spanish beauties) and portraits. He was also illustrator and lithographer. Younger brother and pupil of Philippe Swyncop. He studied at the Academy of Brussels (1908-1917 and 1919-1920) with as teachers, J. Delville, H. Richir and Alfred Bastien. He also travelled to Rome and Venice. In Rome he studied iconography and the study of the great masters. Also found, like his brother, inspiration in Spain. Like his brother, he painted in a lighter genre. But, unlike his brother, he used subtle, spontaneous brushstrokes such as the French Fauvists. His colourful sea views are reminiscent of the works of Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1920 Swyncop assisted his teacher Alfred Bastien with the panoramic painting “Panorama de l’Yser”. Other assistant painters were Charles Léonard and Jef Bonheur, also former pupils of Bastien. The work was done in what later became the mosque of the Cinquantenaire Park. From 1924 onwards, it was given a suitable panoramic building in Ostend. The canvas was severely damaged during the Second World War. Charles Swyncop took part in a group exhibition at ‘Maison d’Art Moderne’ in Brussels in 1920 together with Jean Colin, Philippe Swyncop, Arthur Navez, Samuel Milbauer, L. Bisschops, J. Payro and Jean-Jacques Gailliard. He received an honourable mention (third prize) on the Prize of Rome in 1920. In the years 1922-1923 he made study trips to Spain and Italy. There he made portraits of the local population. He regularly returned to Spain. Commissioned by the Ministry of Colonies, he painted decorative panels for the 1930 World Fair in Antwerp.
