“My life has been shared between two countries, the United States and Mexico. I’ve experienced the hard rural life of my parents in Mexico and the dangerous and fragmented life of the inner city. I am a person made up from experiences from both of these worlds. I am Mexican but I am also American and I can slip between these two worlds with ease and exist in both simultaneously. Culture does not honor borders. Culture is about change and growth.
My work is inspired by the folk stories that my parents and grandparents have passed on. I have a desire to invent and share my own narratives and vision through printmaking. Royal Palm with Turkish Design maintains the interplay between the twodimensionality of the architectural rendering and the modeled line work of the palm. The addition of a subtle fade of sky-like blue in the upper left-hand corner works with the atmospheric marks to further emphasize the illusion of volume in the palm.
Conversely, by bordering the upper half of the print with a pattern from an early Ottoman brocade, Smith-Harrison reminds us that we are not to take a representation of three dimensions as realism. The small medallion in the lower center of the print, although it also is taken from an
Ottoman brocade, doubles as an architectural element. The shape resembles the glyph-like mark used to represent a palm tree in plan view drawings.
The ornate, curvilinear large medallion is the third of the Ottoman elements.
Placed in the lower left of the print, both the shape and the etching in deep reds and blues create an allusion to a polychrome roundel. Both the shape and the placement provide balance to the colonnade and the angular rendering in the center of the right side of the print.
David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. In 1983 he traveled in Europe and studied at the Art and Design Faculty of South Glamorgan Institute in Cardiff, Wales. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey.

This is a unique print from the second state, signed and titled in pencil. the final edition of 180 was completed for the Société des peintres-graveurs français. This is a great example of the texture and tone that can be achieved with drypoint.
In keeping with the best Italian traditions, Houtin's gardens are well furnished with fragmentary architecture conveying a mood of elegiac decay, while the vestiges of grand designs, manifest in a profusion of topiary-lined avenues, evoke French precedents. Elsewhere, temples and pavilions scattered over undulating slopes speak of an enthusiasm for English garden practice.
Bordering at times on the surreal, baroque in their richness and extravagance of conception, Houtin's gardens are hybrid creations in terms of both their botany and architecture, which wittily plunder a wide spectrum of conventions.
François Houtin was born in Craon en Mayenne, France in 1950. He has lived and worked in Paris since 1971. He was trained as a landscape architect, and worked on such prominent projects as the renovation of the Jardin des Tuilleries in 1991. It wasn't until 1973 that he learned printmaking from Jean Delpech, and by 1979 he had become a full-time artist known for his highly detailed prints...
