Artist Comments
One of artist Agata Kijanka's earliest memories is watching - mesmerized and enchanted - as mysterious peaks and valleys of a moonlit landscape passed by as she gazed outside the car window at night. "Always quiet, in awe over what was outlined in light and what remained cloaked in shadow," says Agata. "This is one reason I felt the pull of nocturnal palettes in some of my work. Those early feelings of wonder in response to the landscape and the magic of night have deeply embedded themselves in who I became." Agata taped off the sides of the piece and a small strip along the front edge while she painted, creating a faux floating frame look.
About the Artist
Artist Agata Kijanka creates sensually textured abstract paintings. Working from visual and emotional memory and imagination, Agata builds each artwork in layers - applying paint with scrapers and brayers, transferring paint from other surfaces, and removing paint with solvent and blades. One of the defining moments for Agata as an artist was when she moved alone to Santa Fe from Seattle in 2008. As she explains, it was "a beautiful place that I love with its rich art related history, plentiful galleries, and inspiring landscapes. I anticipated staying for 6 months but I ended up staying for 4 years." She continued her artistic journey to Sedona, AZ and now lives in Albuquerque where she works from her home studio. Putting down roots in the southwest has influenced Agata's work, especially time in the desert, the sunshine and open skies. When she's not painting, Agata enjoys cooking, gardening in her desert yard, and talking endlessly to her rescue dog.

By bridging representational with non-representational forms, the artist seeks to stir personal memories and spark new narratives. “Art is about having a sense of mystery and drama,” she says. Naoko is also passionate about color. She mixes her paints based on the intuitive emotions that different colors can trigger within the viewer, and within herself.
