About the Item
Elk in the Forest - Plein Aire Landscape in Acrylic on Board
Lush Western landscape by California Plein Aire artist Nick White (American, 1943-2009). Several elk are grazing in a clearing, one of which has a full rack of antlers. There are green trees and grass in and around the clearing. Beyond the grass, there are snow covered mountains and blue skies in the background.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Acquired from the artist's estate with a collection of his work.
Board size: 36"H x 42"W
Nick White (American, 1943-2009) began painting in the early 1970s with some early success> Later in life, White was a member (and board member) of the Los Gatos Art Association. He founded the Plein Air group, which he ran until 2009. He was a dedicated painter, leading many excursions regardless of group size. He preferred to paint in acrylic, as its quick-drying properties allowed him to “work fast and loose in the style of the early California impressionists.” Two of his painting were selected for the Fiesta de Artes Posters in 2004 and 2005.

After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture Degree and the Alpha Rho Chi Architectural Medal in 1941, he was awarded scholarships for continued studies a M.I.T., Harvard, and Yale. "Jaywalker"
A native of Texas, Chuck Mauldin has been painting in oil since the age of twelve. His interest in watercolor and pencil drawing grew during his years spent in Louisiana. With his move back to Texas, he has renewed his focus on oil painting, using this medium in a realistic yet painterly style. Striving to quickly capture color and mood with a direct "alla prima" technique is one of his main objectives in painting outdoors on-location. Cows, cowboys and Native Americans often enrich the landscape in his studio work, while anything can inspire his plein air paintings.
