Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 11.75 inches x 17.75 inches
Size including frame: 21.25 inches x 27.25 inches
Provenance: M S Nathan Galleries, 29 Queen Victoria Street, London
A fine seascape painting by Abraham Hulk Snr of fishing boats off a Dutch coast. A number of fishing vessels are depicted sailing in choppy seas near a coast. Meanwhile on the shore to the right, fishermen are shown working next to herring boats. The buildings of a coastal village can be seen in the distance behind the figures.
Abraham Hulk was born in Shoreditch, London on 1 May 1813 the son of a Henrik Hulk, a Dutch merchant and Mary Burroughs. His brother Johannes (John) Frederick Hulk (1829-1911) was a canal and townscape painter, whom he also taught and together they founded a family of Anglo-Dutch artists. His sons Abraham Hulk Jnr (1851-1922), Hendrick Hulk (1842-1937) and William Frederick Hulk (1852-1922) and his nephew Johannes Frederik Hulk (1855–1913) also became artists.
He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam under Jean Augustin Daiwaille (1786–1850) and initially focused on portraits. However, in 1833, he began travelling and visited America where he exhibited in Boston. Perhaps inspired by his travels and also influenced by the Dutch romantic painters, he started to paint seascapes. By 1834, he had returned to Holland and lived in a number of locations including Haarlem and Amsterdam. He exhibited in Holland at the Leeuwarden and The Hague from 1843.
Hulk married Maria Wilhelmina van der Meulen in Amsterdam on 2 November 1837 and together they had 5 children. In 1870, he moved the family to London where he would remain for the rest of his life and lived in Mornington Road, St Pancras. Hulk exhibited at the Society of British Artists and enjoyed considerable success in England as a marine painter. He died on 25 March 1897 in Zevenaar whilst on a visit to the Netherlands.
Examples of his work can be found in the Amsterdam Museum, Teylers Museum, Haalem, Dordrecht, and Enschede Museums.

Exhibition Size Painting
A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones.
As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Some of the smaller more intimate galleries he exhibited at were Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas...

This piece is ready to be displayed and enjoyed, offering a touch of nostalgia and natural beauty to any space.
Les Parson has been a popular British Artist with a loyal following for nearly forty years. Despite having a personal interest in art, Parson never received any formal training. Born in Lancashire in 1945, he worked in London as a Computer Engineer until 1974. He then moved to Cornwall working as an installer of Radar, Sonar and Ship to Shore radio on small fishing boats.
In a chance meeting with local gallery owners in 1978, Parson was encouraged to expand his artistic skills and transform his hobby into a career. He therefore put aside his pencil sketching and watercolour paintings in lieu of the more permanent medium of oil on canvas and become a flourishing full-time artist.
As a professional artist, Les Parson has become renowned for his nostalgic paintings of rural landscapes featuring children at play. His work is internationally recognised, with many of his paintings published as prints. The paintings of Les Parson remain highly-sought after by both domestic and international collectors.
