About the Item

William Stanley Haseltine (1835-1900) Sunny Afternoon, Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1865 Oil on canvas; 20.25 in H x 39.75 in W, actual; 30.75 in H x 50 in W x 4 in D, framed. Provenance: Private collection, Bedford, New York Painting is accompanied by a letter of authenticity by Andrea H. Fahnestock Born in Philadelphia to a family of talented artists, Hasseltine began his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his degree from Harvard University in 1854. Upon returning to Philadelphia, he studied art under Paul Weber, before departing to Germany in 1855. There, Haseltine quickly became one of the leading figures among the group of American artists in Dusseldorf. In 1859, he returned to the United States and joined Emanuel Leutze, Worthington Whittredge, and Albert Bierstadt, in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building, where he began his painting excursions to the New England coast. After his marriage in 1866, Haseltine settled in Rome for most of the next thirty years. Haseltine drew and painted scenes of the New England coast more than any other subject during his few years in America. His renderings of specific rock formations, coastal scenes, and particular light conditions gained him critical acclaim, a strong following of patrons, and assured him a prosperous career. Haseltine’s paintings reflect an important movement in mid-19th century America; the belief that art’s purpose was best expressed through accurate depiction of nature, and that the science of geology had the authority to rival biblical accounts of the earth’s creation. Haseltine accomplished his remarkable accuracy through on-site studies, which he later reworked in his studio. He worked in a detailed manner with a vivid color palette made predominantly of the striking color compliments of orange and blue that suggest a sense of light and air. Most of Haseltine’s American paintings date from the early 1860’s, before his relocation to Italy, and depict the New England shoreline. This painting was executed in Newport, Rhode Island and is a prime example from this important period in Haseltine’s oeuvre.
