Signed lower right, 'Richmond' for George Richmond, RA (British, 1809 – 1896) and painted circa 1845. Displayed in a period, carved and giltwood frame. (Framed dimensions: 22.75 x 21.5 x 1.0) This English painter and portraitist was a founding member of The Ancients, a group of followers of William Blake. Later in life, he established himself as a successful society portrait painter of the British gentry, nobility and royalty. George Richmond was the son of Thomas Richmond the miniature-painter and, also, the father of the painter William Blake Richmond. For a short time, he attended a day school in Soho, before became a student at London's Royal Academy. Here he was much impressed by Henry Fuseli, his professor of painting, and formed a lifelong friendship with Samuel Palmer, and had as fellow-students and companions Edward Calvert...

Signed lower left, 'W. Schwartz' for Walter Erwin Otto Schwartz (Danish, 1889-1958), dated 1935 and inscribed 'Skagen' lower right. A substantial, psychologically penetrating portrait of a young woman with braids, shown dressed in a charcoal wool coat and wearing a copper-colored neck-scarf. The self-possessed sitter stands and meets the viewers gaze directly, proving herself an unusually confident subject for this noted Danish Modernist. Nephew of the Danish academic artist, Frans Schwartz, Walter Schwartz grew up surrounded by the painters who frequented the Danish art colony on the picturesque island of Skagen. Initialed lower left, 'H.S.' for Henrik Schouboe (Danish, 1876-1949) and painted circa 1915. Henrik Schouboe first studied at the Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-1901 and, from 1903-1910, in Italy and Paris. He was awarded numerous stipends and scholarships including the Larssen (1902-3) and the Akademie Scholarship in 1908. In 1906, he had exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg where his submitted entry was purchased by the leading Danish painter of the time, Kristian Zahrtmann, for his personal collection. Schouboe continued to exhibit both domestically and internationally for over thirty years and was the recipient of a variety of prizes, medals and juried awards including the purchase of his 1908 Charlottenborg entry, 'Young Couple in a Landscape', by the State Museum of Art for inclusion in the Danish national collection. Schouboe's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including Copenhagen, Aabenraa, Maribo and the Aalborg Art Museums. We are pleased to offer a delicate and psychologically penetrating portrait of this beautiful and determined girl on the cusp of womanhood.
