Notes: Published by Fine Art Ltd., Saint Louis. The largest and most monumental graphic of Joan Mitchell’s career, this graphic is from one of the artist’s later series entitled Champs, meaning ‘fields’ in French and is indicative of her style with large, sweeping brushstrokes and vibrant combinations of color. Reds, blues and greens merge together on a grey background to depict the concept of the wild yet dazzlingly colorful fields she represents.
Technical Definition: According to Christie’s, a ‘Trial Proof’ is an early impression, taken before the image is complete, incorporating an artist’s revisions and changes, therefore different to the numbered, editioned prints. These prints are often unique in either composition, color or paper type. These prints are often annotated `T.P.’ in the place of numbering.
JOAN MITCHELL (1925-1992) Mitchell gave personal support to many young artists who came to stay with her at Vétheuil—sometimes for just one night; sometimes for an entire summer. Correspondence in her papers reveals that this generosity often had a life-changing impact on those that spent time with her. Her generosity in her own lifetime continued after her death with the formation of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, called for in her will in order to create support and recognition for individual artists. In addition, the Foundation mission includes the promotion and preservation of her legacy, which includes her remarkable body of work, her papers, including correspondence and photographs, and other archival materials related to her life and work.

Joan Mitchell
Joan Mitchell was born in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, and died in 1992 in Paris, France. She received her BFA and MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.
Mitchell's paintings and prints have been the subject of solo exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide including the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
Mitchell's numerous awards include the Award for Painting from the French Ministry of Culture. Her work can be found in numerous public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, California; the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France; and the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, among others.
