About the Item

Illustration to Salomé is an original Rare Book illustrated by Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (Brighton, 1872 – Mentone, 1898) in 1907 and based on Oscar Wilde's Salome. Original First Edition. Format: 4°. Published by Melmoth & Co., London. The book includes 17 photolithographs on precious Japan vellum, a really visionary set of illustrations in Art Nouveau style. The size of the edition is not known, but most probably very small. Mint conditions. Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (Brighton, 1872 – Mentone, 1898) in 1907. Beardsley was an English illustrator and author. His black ink drawings were influenced by Japanese woodcuts, and emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James McNeill Whistler. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster styles was significant despite his early death from tuberculosis. He is one of the important Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) figures. Salomé is a tragedy by Oscar Wilde. The original 1891 version of the play was in French. Three years later an English translation was published. The play tells in one act the Biblical story of stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas (identified as Salome by historian Josephus), who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for pleasing Herod for her dancing, which is described for the first time in this play as the dance of the seven veils.
