About the Item
Original vintage travel poster - Fly to Great Britain by BOAC - featuring the procession of the annual Lord Mayor's Show depicting the Lord Mayor of London's State Coach riding past St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London accompanied by the Company of Pikemen and Musketeers in their ceremonial uniform with the title text in blue lettering and a plane flying in the sky above. Artwork by the notable British painter and illustrator Frank Wootton (1911-1998). The Lord Mayor's gold carriage is kept at the Museum of London and occasionally displayed when not in use; the Lord Mayor's Show has been held since the 16th century. The British Overseas Airways Corporation BOAC was the British state airline created in 1940-1946 as the result of a merger, merging again in 1971-1974 to create British Airways BA. Good condition, restored tears, restored paper losses, backed on linen.

Frank Wootton
Studied at Eastbourne College of Art under Eric Ravilious, Wootton (sometimes misspelled Wooton) was a painter of a range of subjects, including landscapes and equestrian subjects, as well as the aviation images that he is best known for. The Canadian Museum of Flight described Frank Wootton as ‘The Dean of Aviation Art’. With a highly realistic style, Wootton took ‘great trouble’ to search for ‘technical and historical accuracy’. He was assigned as an official artist to the Royal Canadian Air Force and also painted designs for the RAF. He experienced firsthand the aircraft, pilots, ground crews, skyscrapers, and landscapes of the Second World War. A pioneer in ‘aviation art’, his work can be found in museums in Canada, Australia, the UK, and the United States. Frank Wootton was also an extraordinary landscape and equestrian artist. His love of horses was unparalleled and he became vice-president of the Society of Equestrian Artists.
