Woman in Sheer Dress, Silver Gelatin Black & White Photograph by Art Shay
By Art Shay
Located in Chicago, IL
At what appears to be a costume party, this beautiful woman, draped in a sheer tunic, must have been the center of attention. Dressed as Aphrodite, she clearly commands those around her. With his camera as his constant companion, Shay was able to capture moments of everyday life and make them extraordinary. This artwork is currently unframed. Contact gallery for framing options.

“Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.”
Roger Ebert
“[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.”
Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors
“I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.”
William Friedkin, Director of French Connection
“Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.”
Studs Terkel
“Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.”
Hugh Hefner
“Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.”
Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist
“Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.”
Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast
“Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?”
Russell Banks, Novelist
“The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.”
Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris
“Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.”
Arthur Siegel, photographer; IIT Institute of Design President
“I have one of Art Shay’s pictures over my desk. It reminds me every morning of my Chicago roots. Arts photos, like me, have the Chicago accent, which may be to say he’s telling you the truth. I think it takes a realist to see the humor in things. I know it takes a realist to see the depths of tragedy. Art’s work is so real it feels like a Madison Street guy tapping me on the forearm.”

In the famous story of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, it is said she was given her first camera by her daughter as a way to occupy her time while her husband was away. In my case, as with so many others, the beginning of the story was equally fortuitous: Knowing I was about to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, my mother gave me my first camera, saying I would probably want to take pictures while I was away. Neither of us realized how important that little Instamatic camera would turn out to be, and now, 47 years and over a hundred thousand images later, I present the different portfolios shown here as a reflection of the work I have made since back then in 1970.
One by one, my favorite films and papers have been driven from the market by digital media, but I remain loyal to this day to analog photography, and the originals of all of these images were made with real film, either color slides...

Male Nude with Head Down (Sepia Toned Figurative Photograph by David Halliday)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary figurative sepia toned photograph of nude male model
Sepia toned silver gelatin print, edition 3 of 25
Image size: 8 x 8 inches
17.5 x 16.5 x 1 inches framed with 8-ply white mat and non reflective glass.
Signed and dated below image with atelier stamp
This contemporary figurative photograph was taken by David Halliday in 1998. The sepia toned silver gelatin print beautifully captures a standing male model on a simple monotone background. The nude model's flawless skin complements the similarly toned sepia backdrop, while contrasts in light and shadow accentuate his toned back and shoulder muscles. The figure's casual pose lends a serene atmosphere to the image. This print, 3rd in the edition of 25, is framed in a custom brown wood Larson Juhl frame with an 8 ply white mat and non reflective glass. The print is signed with an atelier stamp on the lower right.
About the Artist:
David Halliday's photographs are about beauty, pure and simple. His primary subjects are carefully composed still lifes, portraits and landscapes which he shoots in black and white film with only natural light. He is a purist behind the lens, rarely manipulating his negatives in any way, and a master in the darkroom. His work has an ethereal quality that's translated not only through the subject, but also by the warm colors and sepia tones he uses in his printing.
More about the work:
A master of light, David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Celebrated for his ‘purist’ eye, he poetically captures the nude male body in a selection of sepia-toned prints from 1996. Rarely revealing the model's face, Halliday prefers to focus on the natural drape of limbs, soft folds of flawless skin, and curvature of the spine. Overall, a stunningly intimate portrayal of the male form done with elegance and charm.

- What are low tables called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024Low tables are usually called coffee tables. The name comes from the table height being designed to make it easy to place something, such as a cup of coffee, on the tabletop while seated on a sofa. Alternatively, people may refer to these low tables as cocktail tables. Explore a wide variety of coffee tables on 1stDibs.
- What is a low stool called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021A low stool is called a footstool and is used for supporting the feet. It consists of a single seat, for one person, without a back rest or armrests. Antique and vintage ottomans and poufs add comfort and style to any living room, game room, home office or minimalist lounge space. An ottoman is a short seat or footstool that is also often used to store items. A pouf is similar, but it’s typically more petite than an ottoman, usually without the storage space inside. Shop a range of antique and vintage footstools on 1stDibs.
- What is a low sofa called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A low sofa is called a ‘low-profile’ sofa. The low-profile sofa is snug with the ground, and helps to give the illusion of airy and light space in smaller areas. You can shop a collection of sofas from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- What is a low dresser called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A low dresser is also sometimes called a lowboy. - What is a low chair called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023A low chair is called a slipper chair. When these chairs began being manufactured in Europe in the late 17th century, they were often used by people putting on their slippers or shoes, giving the accent chairs their name. Slipper chairs were especially popular during the Victorian era, when they were often clad in silk or velvet and adorned with decorative flourishes like tassels and embroidery. During the 1950s, American designer Billy Baldwin reimagined the slipper chair with a simpler look that reflected mid-century modern design principles. Shop a selection of slipper chairs on 1stDibs.
- Can a coffee table be too low?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertAugust 8, 2024Yes, a coffee table can be too low. Most experts recommend choosing a coffee table that is around one to two inches lower than the seat height of your sofa or loveseat. You may find it difficult to access items on the tabletop while seated if you choose a shorter table. In addition, an overly low coffee table can make a room feel cramped or unbalanced. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes, designers intentionally place ultra-low coffee tables in spaces to create a bold contrast in a large room. Feel free to break from convention when choosing a coffee table. What's most important is that the finished result appeals to you and allows you to enjoy your seating area to the fullest. Shop a wide range of antique, vintage and contemporary coffee tables on 1stDibs.
- Why are console tables so low?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023Console tables are not low. Typically, consoles are about the height of a desk but are much narrower. As a result, they work well against walls and can be used to hold lamps and decorative objects. While modern console tables commonly feature four legs, you can still find the two-legged variety, which is ideal for nestling behind the sofa. Some also feature shelves for display and storage space or cabinet doors and drawers for hiding clutter. Find vintage console tables on 1stDibs.
- What is a low back chair?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A low-back chair is designed to provide lumbar support to the lower back and mid-back. These chairs have a small backrest that reaches till the middle of one's back. Shop a collection of antique, vintage and contemporary low back chairs from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023What low-hanging necklaces are called depends on their specific length. A necklace that measures 26 to 36 inches long is an opera necklace. Those that are 36 or 37 inches or longer are rope necklaces. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of long necklaces from some of the world's top dealers.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The chabudai, or the short Japanese dining table makes the most of limited space by serving many functions in a Japanese home. They often feature collapsible legs so they can be stored. Diners sit on pillows on the floor, rather than chairs, again freeing up more space by not having bulky chairs. Shop a collection of Japanese furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A low bas-relief sculpture refers to a carving that is crafted in such a manner that the artwork is barely protruding from the background piece. On 1stDibs, find a collection of low bas-relief pieces from some of the world’s top sellers.
- Lotus GalleryMarch 17, 2021A Japanese low screen was traditionally used while seated upon the floor. The low screen would block wind and drafts, provide limited privacy, and are often decorated with seasonal themes.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021A light fixture should hang 7 feet off the floor or 3 feet above a table. As a general rule of thumb, one should not look into a light fixture when they are standing.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Modern coffee tables tend to be low because they’re most commonly placed in front of couches and chairs. Historically, coffee tables were placed behind the couch which necessitated a taller table. Over time, as styles changed and coffee tables came to be positioned in front of couches, their heights were lowered to accommodate the modern arrangement. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of vintage and contemporary coffee tables from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021The best lighting depends on your space and style. It’s best to have multiple sources of light at different heights to ensure uniform illumination. With low ceilings, the ceilings should be painted white for a highly reflective surface. Flush mount lighting fixtures or a ceiling fan with a light is good for low ceilings. Shop a range of antique and vintage lighting fixtures on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021A low chest of drawers is called a lowboy. A lowboy sits at waist height and was a prominent piece of bedroom furniture in the 18th century. These low chests of drawers were a clothing storage solution before tallboys and highboys came into fashion. On 1stDibs, there is a variety of antique and vintage low chests of drawers available for sale.
- 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023No, 12 inches isn’t necessarily too low for a coffee table. For balance, choose a coffee table that is about two to four inches lower than the seat of the largest piece of furniture around it. Usually, this will be the sofa. If your sofa’s seat is 14 to 16 inches high, a 12-inch coffee table will likely be in proportion. Find an assortment of coffee tables on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between high-back and low-back sofas is that the former has a taller backrest than the latter. Some people, especially tall men and women, feel that a high-back sofa is more comfortable because the taller back offers more support for the shoulders and neck. Low-back sofas are popular picks for open-plan interiors, as they allow sightlines to be maintained across a space. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of high-back and low-back sofas.
