Artist: Charles Ernest Cundall
Portrait of a Family in an Interior - British 1950's art oil painting
By Charles Ernest Cundall
Located in London, GB
This interesting British Post Impressionist figurative interior oil painting is by noted artist Charles Cundall and entitled A Conversation Piece. Painted circa 1955 the composition is the interior of a living room with a couple and their two young children, cat and dog. It is full of fascinating details such as the display of porcelain figures in the wall unit, The wonky lampshade on the piano with lovely reflections in its metal base, the slightly shabby walls, the two inviting open doors to other rooms, the way the whole family are looking at the dog (of course!) as it eyes up the tray of tea. Perhaps the dog is in fact the conversation piece of the family and life revolves around him the way the painting does. Is it the artist's family? An excellent example of Cundall's work and life with a dog.

Portrait of Jeannie Netter, wearing a Burgundy dress
By Fedor Encke
Located in West Sussex, GB
Fedor Encke (1851-1926) – German
Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, standing in an interior, wearing a Burgundy Velvet Dress holding a Pink Rose
Oil on canvas :85 ¾ x 50 ¼ in. Frame :103 x 67 ¼ in. Signed & inscribed ‘New York’. Circa 1910
Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm.
Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau.
Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris.
Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt.
Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899.
Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time.
To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism.
Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926.

Rare French, Paris 1935 Judaica Oil Painting Rabbis Studying S. Fleischman
Located in Surfside, FL
Rare Judaica Art. Jewish genre scene. In the tradition of Moritz Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman and Maurycy Gottlieb and later of Tully Filmus, Zalman Kleinman and Itshak Holtz the artist captures this Jewish scene with a particular sensitivity. Part of the Ecole De Paris The term "School of Paris" was used in 1925 by André Warnod (fr) to refer to the many foreign-born artists who had migrated to Paris.
School of Paris artists were progressively marginalized. Beginning in 1935 art publications no longer wrote about Marc Chagall, just magazines for Jewish audiences, and by June 1940 when the Vichy government took power, School of Paris artists could no longer exhibit in Paris at all.
The artists working in Paris between World War I and World War II experimented with various styles including Cubism, Orphism, Surrealism and Dada. Foreign and French artists working in Paris included Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Constantin Brâncuși, Raoul Dufy, Tsuguharu Foujita, artists from Belarus like Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, and Jacques Lipchitz, the Polish artist Marek Szwarc and others such as Russian-born prince Alexis Arapoff. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The "core members were almost all Jews, and the resentment expressed toward them by French critics in the 1930s was unquestionably fueled by anti-Semitism." One account points to the 1924 Salon des Indépendants, which decided to separate the works of French-born artists from those by immigrants; in response critic Roger Allard (fr) referred to them as the School of Paris. Jewish members of the group included Emmanuel Mané-Katz, Chaim Soutine, Adolphe Féder, Chagall, Moïse Kisling, Maxa Nordau...

Charles Ernest Cundall was an esteemed and versatile British painter. He worked in both oils and watercolours and is today regarded as one of the most distinguished artist of the 20th century. His paintings are rich in texture, light and movement.
He was very much an establishment artist of record. He portrayed Royal occasions, including the Coronation of 1954, major sporting events such as a test match at Lords and The Derby and important civic events and portraits. He is also known for his large panoramic landscapes and impressive city scenes.
He was born 6th September 1890 in Stretford near Manchester in Lancashire, though spent some of his childhood in the Philippines and Australia. He was educated at Ackworth School and found his first employment as a designer of pottery and stained glass at the Pilkington Pottery Company, under Gordon Forsyth. Wishing to develop his artistic talent, he attended evening classes at the Manchester School of Art and Levenshulme Evening School. He was awarded the chief honours at the national competition of Schools of Art in 1908 and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London.
His studies here were interrupted by the Great War, in which he served in the Royal Fusiliers. He was seriously wounded in the right arm in 1917 and subsequently learnt to paint with his left hand.
On his recovery, after the war, he returned to study at the RCA and then at the Slade School of Art, 1919-1920, before further studies in Paris at the Academie Colarossi and in Italy.
Almost fifty when the Second World War broke out, Cundall first worked on short –term contracts for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee before being given a full-time salaried commission as an Admiralty artist to work on Merchant Navy subjects. He worked in the Thames, the Medway and in the West Country before being assigned to the Air Ministry in 1941 and was appointed official artist to the Royal Air Force and then the Royal Navy. He worked with Bomber Command and produced a series of works painted “For the Nation’s War Records”, including ‘Servicing a Sunderland”, ‘Battle of Britain Anniversary 1943’ and many others. He was sent to various places during the Second World War, including Quebec in 1944. At the end of the war King George VI purchased two of Cundall’s paintings showing war time activities in Windsor Great Park. After the war, Cundall accompanied the Royal family on their visit to South Africa aboard the battleship Vanguard.
Cundall was a prolific exhibitor; he held his first solo exhibition in 1927 at Colnaghi’s. He became a mainstay of the Royal Academy, exhibiting there each and every year from 1923-1970. He also exhibited at the New English Arts club, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Leicester and Grosvenor Galleries in London and the Manchester City Art Gallery,
Cundall was well-read and well-travelled; from the 1920s he had visited France, Normandy, Brittany and the South. In the 1930s he went to Sweden and Russia, and in the 1940s he went to Northern Ireland, the United States, France and Italy.
His artistic ability was much respected and well recognised by all the major art bodies; he was elected a member of the New English Arts Club in 1924, a member of the Royal Society of Painters in 1933, an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in1936 and a member there in 1941. He was elected a Royal Academian in 1944. He was also a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers.
Between his various travels Cundall was based in Whitehead’s Grove, Chelsea from 1918 onwards and he worked from Great Cheyne Studio, Cheyne Row, London. He was married to the artist Jacqueline Pieterson, herself a figurative artist of repute. He died at home on 4th November 1971.
Today Cundall’s works can be found in many prestigious galleries and museums, including the National Maritime museum, Greenwich, Tate Britain, Imperial War Museum, the National Museum of Wales and Manchester City Art Gallery.
