Canvas measures 61x50 cm.

He was born in 1951. Under the direction of the master Pedro Bermejo, he began his artistic career, quickly highlighting and observing in his works an unusual mastery of drawing.
A very mature painter who has known how to stop time in all his works. His themes are preferably costumbristas although in his work the usual thing is to see eight century themes, with horse carriages, hats, umbrellas and still lifes.
Observing his work reminds us, by the subject, of Maestro...

Exhibited:
“Art of Collecting,” Flint Institute of Art, Flint, Michigan, 23 November 2018 – 6 January 2019.
This vibrant portrait of young man was traditionally considered a work by Jacques-Louis David, whose style it recalls, but to whom it cannot be convincingly attributed. Rather, it would appear to be by a painter in his immediate following—an artist likely working in France in the first decade of the nineteenth century. Several names have been proposed as the portrait’s author: François Gérard, Louis Hersent, Anne-Louis Girodet (Fig. 1), Theodore Gericault, and Jean-Baptiste Wicar, among others. Some have thought the artist Italian, and have proposed Andrea Appiani, Gaspare Landi...

The present work is a spectacular jewel-like canvas by Amigoni, rich in delicate pastel colors, most likely a modello for an altarpiece either lost or never painted. In it the Madonna stands firmly upon a cloud in the heavens, her Child resting on a delicate veil further supported by a cloud, as he gently wraps his arm around his mother’s neck. From above angels prepare to lower flowers and a wreath, while other angels and seraphim surrounding the two joyfully cavort.

Scarsellino’s art is widely regarded as critical link between the Renaissance and the Baroque styles in Emilian painting; not only was he an important transmitter of the heritage of the Renaissance, but he was also open to innovative ideas, and was one of the earliest to experiment with the trend to naturalism that would become fundamental to art of the new century. Born around 1550, he received his earliest training from his father Sigismondo, an architect and painter; it was probably while working at his father’s side as a youth that he acquired the nickname Scarsellino, or “little Scarsella”. After absorbing the principles of his art in Ferrara and Parma, he went to Venice in 1570, staying for four years and working in the shop of Veronese. In the following decade, his art —especially in terms of its piety and its development of landscape— demonstrates a strong sympathy with that of the Carracci, with whom he worked in 1592-1593 at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. Maria Angela Novelli and later Alessandra Frabetti both propose that Scarsellino traveled to Rome, although such a trip has not been documented; if he did travel to Rome, it probably would have occurred during the years that Scarsellino’s colleagues Agostino and Annibale Carracci were there, that is, beginning in 1595 and until 1609. The last decades of Scarsellino’s career again involve stylistic experimentation, this time in a manner that would bring his work very close to the progressive figurative naturalism of Carlo Bononi and prepare the way for Guercino.
The present portrait of a distinguished gentleman had been long thought to be by Paolo Veronese and was in fact attributed to him by such distinguished connoisseurs as Adolfo Venturi and Wilhelm Suida. The portrait’s style is, however, distinct from Veronese’s, although clearly indebted to it, and the attribution to the young Scarsellino is wholly convincing. The painting would then date from the 1570s – a date confirmed by the costume the subject wears. The puffed hat that appears in the painting had a rather short-lived vogue in the early 1570s. One sees it in Giambattista Moroni’s Portrait of Count...

Woman in a Red Dress, Mid Century Female Illustrator/ Artist, Elizabeth Taylor ?
By Gladys Rockmore Davis
Located in Miami, FL
Mid-century female illustrator/artist Gladys Rockmore Davis paints a compelling portrait of a contemplative beauty who looks like Elizabeth Taylor. Frontal and lateral forces work together in this pyramidal composition. The sitter stares down at the viewer creating a frontal tension. Her hypnotic gaze is counterbalanced by the lateral movement of her crossed hands and triggers an emotional response. Gladys Rockmore Davis is both a work-for-hire illustrator and a fine artist- She was an illustrator for clients such as Upjohn, Munsingwear, Elgin Watches, and Johnson & Johnson. Davis had a show at the prestigious Midtown Gallery and Babcock Gallery in New York. She studied at the California School of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, and Art Students League. William R. San Sebastian, 1600s, oil on canvas
By Francesco Curradi
Located in Milan, IT
Oil painting on canvas. The beautiful painting shows the face of St. Sebastian, depicted up below the shoulders, from one of which, uncovered, a crossbow arrow appears (the typology is recognizable by the type of arrow, dyed red). The painting was probably commissioned for devotional reasons: Sebastiano, a military saint, is the protector of soldiers but above all of archers and crossbowmen, and the choice to paint the small red arrow refers to the commissioning of a member of this military group. The work is accompanied by the expertise of the art historian Maurizio Marini, a specialist in Baroque painting and the art of Caravaggio. Marini considers this small portrait of the saint to be an autograph work of excellent technical-stylistic quality by the painter Francesco Curradi, considered one of the protagonists of the renewal of Florentine painting in the first half of the seventeenth century. Trained in the Florentine workshop of Giovan Battista Naldini, an eclectic and refined artist, Curradi surpassed the master by entering into a morphological and conceptual update and, freeing himself from the sentimental and religious limits of the Catholic Reform, he was able to acquire a remarkable psychological subtlety and an extreme pictorial quality. His qualities earned him many commissions and his works can be found in many churches and collections in the Umbrian and Tuscan countryside. Curradi had Cesare Dandini among his pupils, who, due to his refined features, often posed as a model for the works of the master, as would have happened for this San Sebastian...

Tobias and the Angel
By Francesco Curradi
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Private Collection, New York City
This large painting depicts Tobias, the son of blind Tobit, with his companion and guardian, the Archangel Raphael. The tale of their adventures is told in the Book of Tobit, one of the books of the Old Testament Apocrypha. In the present painting Tobias stands at the right, wearing a richly embroidered gold dress as he holds a basket containing a fish against his side. This relatively diminutive fish represents the “great fish” that leaped out of the Tigris River and that Raphael directed Tobias to catch and gut, preserving the heart, liver, and gall. The gall would cure his father Tobit’s blindness, and the burned heart and liver would drive the demons away from Sarah, Tobias’s future wife. Raphael, wearing a red cloak over an olive dress, stands to the left, raising an unguent jar with his right hand. His brilliant wings can be seen behind him – a visual accommodation for the viewer as in the biblical telling his identity is only revealed at the end of their journey.
Francesca Baldassari has written of the present painting (April 2016), noting that Tobias and the Angel...
