Late 19th Century Chinese Glazed Terracotta Seated Luohan Figure

About the Item

This hand-shaped and incised terracotta Luohan or seated figure of a scholar was made in China at the end of the imperial dynastic period circa 1900. Luohan or a term for an Arhat who are the historical disciples of the Buddha. These figures have been seen throughout Buddhistic artist tradition for as long as the Buddhas religious teachings have existed. The figure seated on a rock rests in a standard pose wearing monastic robes. The terracotta is well modeled and one can even see the fingerprints of the maker in the material. The face is well done and the robes are elaborate giving the piece a rich intellectual feeling. Glazed after firing with a clear to runny brown glaze the piece now sits on a very nice old wooden base cut directly from the trunk of a tree and unshaped other than to be polished and debarked creating a natural feeling base for the sculpture. The measurements given include the piece resting on the base.
