Massive Venetian Abstract Solid Walnut Forcola Sculpture by Giuseppe Carli
About the Item
A massive Venetian abstract solid walnut "Forcola (Oarlock)" sculpture by Giuseppe Carli, circa 1972. Carli is recognized as one of Venice, Italy's foremost "Remeri", an elite group of venetian artisan forcoli carvers, with most of Carli's larger works owned by private collectors or displayed in museums around the world. This piece is signed and dated on the base and measures 13"W x 4"D x 36"H; it comes with a custom made white laminate display pedestal that measures 12"W x 12"D x 41.5"H. The overall height of the sculpture inserted into the base is 70"H.
A forcola is an oarlock, used on the gondolas in Venice, providing different resting points for the boat's oar, due to it's curved shape. This distinctive shape gives them a highly decorative value, as well as a functional one. This piece is a "traditional" stern forcola made for the gondola boats of Venice. Beautiful and rare piece!.
