Antique Hand Painted Pair of Lady Bust Sculptures by Clodion Aka Claude Michel

About the Item

Rare pair of Rococo style lady sculptures in terra colors by Claude Michel, (1738-1814). This beautiful pair of endearing and meaningful lady sculptures was originally made sometime in the late 1700s and the originals were cast in bronze. These ladies were named Le Printemps (in image 1 on the left) and L'automne (in image 1 on the right). We know this, because we purchased these practical size and stunning 'spring' and 'autumn' bust sculptures many years ago and back then we found a photo of the originals. They were cast in bronze and they had the metal 'name tags' on the front of the base. Those original bronze sculptures by Clodion (of which we have a photo) are worth a small fortune, but although we think these were cast using the original molds of the Clodion sculptures, we think ours were created in the late 19th century. We have enjoyed them for many years, but we know feel its time for them to move on. The differences between these two striking ladies are subtle, but the spring lady looks a little bit more cheerful and her hair and upper torso are decorated with blooming flowers. The autumn lady looks slightly dreamy, as if thinking back to her beautiful days in springtime and the oak leafs in her hair are the symbols that confirm the deeper meaning of her name. You could think of these sculptures solely representing the seasons of the year, but artists (especially the better ones) usually have a deeper meaning in mind. We feel the artist is saying that humans too have seasons in their lives and each has its own meaning, 'worth' and beauty. If you appreciate these rare Clodion sculptures as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially, since our fair price for this rare and meaningful pair includes perfect packing and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 days. Maximum height x width x depth 12 x 5.1 x 4.7 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

  • Antique, Rare & Decorative Pair of Hand Carved and Hand Painted Horse Sculptures
    Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning and unique pair of matching horse sculptures. With a combined experience of almost 30 years in the antiques trade, we were thrilled to once again find beautifully hand-crafted and decorative antiques that we had never seen before. From the density and the weight we can see and feel that these highly decorative horse sculptures are made of a tropical hardwood. Like, for example, with antique mirror frames or church sculptures these horses too were first covered with a mixture of chalk and glue so that the paint would hold longer. And, as so often is the case with antiques, the colors that were used for painting these horses are so much more beautiful than anything you find in this day and age that they truly are an absolute joy to look at. From the colors, the wear, the materials and the techniques that were used to create these horses we can see that these are 19th century antiques. However and unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be able to tell you from which country these highly decorative and sizeable works of art originate. We just can't find matching style horse sculptures anywhere on the worldwide web. They could be Chinese or Nepalese, but they could also be Persian or Arabian. We just have not been able to find out. What we do know is that they are definitely antique, they are in beautiful condition (with some wear, consistent with their age), they are highly decorative, probably unique and they have a look and feel that will instantly change the atmosphere of the room they are in. Mind you, our sharp price for this wonderful pair of horse sculptures...

  • Large Antique Hand Carved Sandstone Sculpture, Bust of Christ with Display Stand
    Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality and mint condition bust sculpture from the early 1900s with maker's name. This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us. Our fair price for this museum worthy sculpture again includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days. • Pair of Bronze Figurines after Michel Clodion
    By Claude Michel Clodion
    Located in LA CIOTAT, FR
A delightful pair of patinated bronze statuettes, originally candelabra, after Clodion (Claude Michel Clodion 1738 – 1814), depicting a young satyr and satyress. Mounted on truncated columns of fluted white marble, and marked with the Clodion signature (of questionable authenticity) these figurines now show no trace of the original candelabra screw fixtures. The original models for these figurines are attributed to Clodion (for the young satyr) and to Louis Felix de la Rue...
