Cradle with Infant, Bovey Tracey, circa 1790

About the Item

A very fine example in creamware of an infant swaddled and lying in its crib. These miniature representations served various purposes: Decorative objects: Miniature models of infants in cribs were often crafted as decorative items for display in homes. These small, intricate sculptures showcased the craftsmanship and artistic skills of the artisan, and they were often admired for their fine detailing. Toys: Small models of infants in cribs were sometimes used as toys, especially for young girls. These toys served as a way for children to learn about childcare, as they could mimic the actions of their parents or caregivers in taking care of an infant. Memento or keepsake: Miniature models could also be created to commemorate the birth of a child or as a memento of an individual's infancy. These keepsakes could be passed down through generations as a way to preserve family history and remember past generations. Religious or symbolic use: In some cases, these models might have had religious or symbolic significance, particularly in the context of Christian traditions. For example, miniature nativity scenes, which included a baby Jesus in a manger, were popular during the Christmas season. These scenes were used to celebrate and reflect on the religious story of Jesus' birth. Conversely, it has been suggested they were fertility symbols, given at weedings, and predating Christianity entirely.
