Georgian Pair of Mason's Ironstone Tea Plates Basket Japan Pattern, circa 1818
US$462.20per set

About
This is a good early pair of Mason's Ironstone pottery tea plates, hand painted in the very decorative Basket Japan pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, in the George 111rd period, circa 1813-1820.
The plates are circular with a notched indented rim.
Small diameter tea plates like these are much rarer than the normal dinner and desert plates.
These tea plates are both hand decorated in one of Mason's most beautiful chinoiserie patterns, called Basket Japan, which is one of Mason's most collected and striking patterns. The pattern is hand painted, over-glaze in enamels of cobalt blue and burnt orange all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club
The bases have the single line impressed mark "MASONS PATENT Ironstone China" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
These plates exhibit the individual differences in detail and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces.
