Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Hot Water Jug

US$1,497.38

About

A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver wine or water jug, an addition to our antique silverware collection. This impressive Victorian sterling silver hot water jug has a baluster form onto a circular pedestal foot. The plain body of this fine Victorian water jug is embellished with a broad band of bright cut ornamentation depicting figures equipped with spears and shields amongst horse-drawn chariots. This narrative display incorporates a circular cartouche illustrating the contemporary bright cut engraved initial 'C.' This impressive scene is flanked with evolute scroll and Greek key fret band borders. The upper rim and lip of the jug are encompassed with a paralleling bead decorated border. This impressive antique water jug is fitted with a hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted by a fluted carved wood finial. The water jug retains the original opposing scroll woven bamboo decorated handle, incorporating a scrolling thumbpiece to the upper portion. The foot of this Victorian water jug is ornamented with a further band of bright cut engraved evolute scrolling ornamentation in addition to applied bead decoration. This versatile jug could be functionally used for hot water or coffee. This jug displays desirable and unusual ornamentation for its size. Condition This antique water jug is a very good gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent presentation condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body and part hallmarks to the cover are all very clear. Dimensions Length from back of handle to tip of lip 12.3cm/4.8". Diameter of body 9.2cm/3.6". Diameter of foot 6.5cm/2.6". Height 18.6cm/7.3". Weight 9.4 troy ounces/291g. Maker: Henry Wilkinson & Co. Date: 1857. Origin: Sheffield, England. Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of Victorian silverware.
