Stunning Rare "Zodiak" Lamp by Architect Ton Alberts for Raak Lighting Amsterdam

About the Item

Beautifully elegant and rare Zodiak floor lamp, model D2080, designed early 1960's by Dutch architect Ton Alberts for dutch avant-garde lighting company RAAK. Anton (Ton) Alberts (6 July 1927 – 16 August 1999) was a Dutch architect best known for the ING Bank (1982) in the Bijlmer district of Amsterdam and the Gas Corporation headquarters in Groningen. (photo 2) Alberts was involved with Situationist International before being expelled in 1960. He had been involved with fellow Situationists Constant and Har Oudejans in setting up a labyrinth in the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam, but the project fell apart amidst acrimony. Officially he was expelled for designing churches, although Asger Jorn relates the expulsion more to the "Amsterdam affair". In 1963 he founded the firm Alberts and Van Huut with Max van Huut, guided by the principles of Organic architecture. His work also has its roots in the anthroposophical architecture of Rudolf Steiner. Alberts offered to work for free on the Peace Parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina but was only able to create sketches before he died, aged 72, in Amsterdam. Still, by Albert's sketches the Peace Flame House, a community centre, was built in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a gift by Peace Flame Foundation Netherlands to this after-war community. This rare design forms part of the permanent design collection of the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam and the Boijmans van Beuningen museum Rotterdam. As the original Raak advert points out this rare design broke with the tradition of light coming from above placing the light source at low level which creates an alternative dramatic lighting effect revealing the previously hidden textures within room structures. The pure form features a Mahogany square frame supporting a 19.7" (50cm) diameter opal glass globe , the entire structure elevated by four ultra sleek minimalist brushed aluminum legs. The internal ceramic bulb holder retains the original RAAK manufacturer's label. The Mahogany frame features wonderfully executed 'half blind' finger joints at each of the corners, a detail often found on the best of Scandinavian design, so you can really feel the quality of this piece. This stunning lamp would be a great complement to any Scandinavian or "Zen" type interiors and is of an impressive scale. The opal glass globe emits a wonderful pure and gentle ,cozy warm glow, the quality of the light reminds me of the Akari lamps by Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi.
