Gilt Biedermeier Mirror, France circa 1820

About the Item

From France circa 1820 comes this fantastic gilt Biedermeier mirror. This breathtaking golden frame shows different gilding techniques like composition gold and gold leaf. Beautiful floral stucco works in each corner adorned by a gorgeous looking patina are the highlights as well as the red shining half rods. This effect comes from the substratum for gold leaf, the so-called "Bolus", which shines through the heavily abraded gold surface - you can even see the overlaps. This luxurious gilt mirror was minimal restored to keep the original "untouched" look as best as we can, - only the mirror glass had to be renewed. The backside was closed with paper.
